Self Assigned IP addressing Issue

    Hi,

I am having an issue with my power book 12" notebook with 10.5.4.

    I keep getting a self assigned 169.254.X.X

I have a voyager 2110 router with the latest firmware on it.

I have a Mac Book Pro (10.5.4), Dell Notebook and iPhone (2.0.1) all connecting and working fine.

I found some help on the Internet which recommended resetting the firmware which involved restarting the Mac, holding Command, Option, O & F. The typing in reset-nvram and reset-all commands. It did the job on Saturday but the issue returned last night and the reset didn't make a difference. I have repaired permissions and verified the disk but no change.

    Any ideas??

If your router by any chance configured to lock out MAC addresses of unknown computers?

Ill check it when I get home but I dont think so.

    It literally happens within seconds.

Was browsing away, closed the notebook which set it to sleep, passed it to my brother a couple of minutes later and it stopped working.

Same last night. One minute working, the next nothing

    Two things.

Whats the IP address of the router?

If its wireless you may be losing the signal. Check by opening Internet Connect app ( application folder ) and leave it open on your desktop ( make sure the wireless tab is selected ). You can position the box so you can keep an eye on the signal strength while you surf. This will tell you a lot and if you have only one or two bars you will lose your connection.

Its also good practice to tick the 'Show Airport status in menu bar' option to keep an eye on it during normal operation.

I cant surf as the notebook is not connecting correctly

There is full signal strength in the airport icon in the menu bar.

Go into the network settings in system prefs. Make sure the location = automatic and show = airport. Select TCP/IP tab. In Configure IPv4 have you selected 'Using DHCP'. See what happens when you press the Renew DHCP Lease button.

I'm on 10.4 so the route is slightly different for you. Network-->wireless, select Advanced button.
