Clubs to include

Alrigth lads I've often wondered whether I need to carry my 3 and 5 wood in the bag with me. I have a 10.5 G5 Driver which i hit pretty sweet and long as well as a recently purchased Taylor Made Rescue Mid 3 hybrid 19'. I'm not too sure if I require the 3 and 5 wood really. on the par 5's I wouldnt reach the greens in 2 as the 3 wood can be a little erratic off the turf and the fairways are pretty undulating. I reckon if i can learn to control the rescue club it should carry the distance required. Any opinions? The only real worry is about teeing off with a rescue club on the shorter par 4's

Maybe carry the 3 wood and get rid of one of your longer irons for the hybrid. I carry a 3 wood and then irons from 3 to PW and 3 wedges. A lot of pros carry 4 metal woods including driver and maybe 4 wedges at the expense of the longer irons. The 1st Iron they have in the bag is 4.

It depends how much of a similarity there is in distance between the 5 wood and the rescue club. I'd drop the 3 wood if your driving is good and use the 5 wood off the tee if needed or off the fairway.

What pros are these?? I don't know for sure but I'd be very surprised if there were more than a handful of tour pros doing this.

It's a personal thing but I've always just used simple maths, just making sure that I'm not doubling up on certain yardages.

I use 3-PW irons with 54 and 60 wedges. Driver, 3 wood and 18 degree hybrid.

The idea being that the hybrid goes a club further than the 3 iron and shorter than the 3 wood. So there's no crossover anywhere as opposed to a lot of people I see with 5 woods or hybrids that go the same as a 3, 4 or 5 iron. I know some people prefer to have both for different lies and flights etc but for me, it's not worth it.

I don't have much need for a gap wedge because I don't mind hitting short PWs... and I'm sh*te with my wedges anyway ;)

Well at the irish open for example I spent a fair bit of time with some friends who were playing. They had Driver, 3 wood, a rescue and hybrid. In the time I had to wait around for them to do their thing I would keep an eye on what the other players had in there bag. A lot of the players were carrying similar clubs in there bag. I guess it was coz the hybrids are easier to get up in the air and moving than maybe a long Iron would be. Granted not many of the big names from tour would have this but a lot of the field did.

That's good advice there. I carry a gap wedge just now and i only use it about once every two rounds so i'm debating the need for it.

I've a bit of a problem at the other end of the bag. My driver is pretty consistent but i need something for off the fairway. I carry a 3-wood just now but i hit the ball too low with it.

My next up from the 3-wood is a 3-iron rescue. Basically this means that if i'm on the line for reaching a par 5 in two or needing to just find the fairway on a par 4, i go with the rescue. That's fine as i'm good with it, but there's a huge gap between how far i hit my driver and my rescue - a 50-yards or so gap.

The 3-wood is 15 degree so i'm thinking of going to a 4-wood. I'm struggling to find one i like though so contemplating a 5-wood. As you say though Sheet, i need to be careful that the 5 wood doesn't just overlap with my rescue (20 degrees).

Shriek do you not use your 54 degree wedge much? I carry a 53 degree vokey (it's a 52 degree one adjusted to 53) and I use it a lot. It carries 100 yards for me and it's the most used iron in my bag.
I use driver, 3 wood, 22 degree rescue (instead of my 5 wood), 3 iron - pw, 53 degree gap wedge and 60 degree lob wedge (which I use from sand too).

My 3 iron is a 200 yard carry club, my rescue carries 210.
So there is a bit of a gap between the rescue and the 3 wood but I got the rescue to be an easier club to hit, especially out of the rough. A lower loft rescue would be more "in-between" the 3 wood and the 3 iron but not as useful to me. (I had an 18 degree rescue that was longer but less easy to get airborne out of a moderate lie).

Pretty much exactly the same set-up as me Licksy, and yes, I use the 54 degree a lot given that I'm left with 60-110 yards on a lot of par 4s and lay-up par 5s. I'm tall and hit it high anyway so I've always preferred a slightly stronger sand wedge.

As for the hybrid, mine is 18 deg but also 1/4 inch longer to ensure it flies further than the 3 iron by at least a club.

I'm longer than average so having these 200+ yardage clubs in order is a big benefit for going at par 5s in 2, rather than trying to force a 5 wood or go easy on a 3 wood because I've left something out in favour of an extra wedge or a rescue that goes the same as my 4 iron!
