look in recycle bin?.. only joking... You'll have to go into C: program files and try to find the icon in the program file.. then just create a desktop icon again..

Don't write anything to the same drive the file was stored on, get some file recovery software and install in onto a USB pen drive and run it. Search for your file. And realise that Shift-Delete sucks donkeys and sometimes the recycle bin does come in handy.

If it was on the desktop its usually a shortcut...unless you were actually in the file folder at the time?

Not necessarily true and obviously not in this case . Your desktop is in effect a folder where you can store anything you like - it just happens to open on startup with a fancy background and is where Windows likes to put your shortcuts . Browse to C/DocumentsandSettings/YourUserAccount and you'll find a plain old folder just like the rest of them called Desktop .

+1 to everthing that TouchingVirus said , OP .
