    19th Centuary About 1870 onwards

I'm interested in Family History. I've recentely been given some old photos, but some are very faded. Any advice I'd appreciate. I'm based in Cork.

I can post the picture, if that's possible

    Many thanks
    Gerard:D

This could still be better but here's a quick attempt. by the way the fact that its in gif format and the compression used really ruins it. It would be better if you could scan it at about 300+ dip and save it in bitmap (.bmp) tiff or even jpeg (.jpg) format

looking at it there seems to be plenty of detail there to still work with. but it looks like alot of cloning for you :D.

as everyone else said larger scan

I'm doing one for my mother at the moment too and I scanned it at 600dpi working on the faces individually because the file sizes are so big

copying out the faces to an individual file and work on that remove the background paste the fixed face in on a different layer

it might be helpful if you posted up a section of the rescanned image, like the face, instead of the whole thing.

    Thanks for all your help.
I'm going to have to get the photo from an Uncle again and scan again. It may take a week or so to get the photo

What scanner would you recommend I use. I've got to get a new one anyway

Haven't a clue. I used a scanner/photocopier/printer that came with the mothers computer, it seemed to be grand. I am assuming epson would be ok.

    61879.jpg

desaturated the scan and worked on the face it is hard to know if the absence of the right hand side is due to a smudge or some facial injury.

Totally new to post processign and Photoshop - but I thought I'd give it a go - but would definately benefit from a better scan!
