Bring back "UCG"

for generations this university college was called UCG. Some years ago for some obscure reason connected to NUI legislation that college name was changed to NUIG. UCD and UCC retain their old names.

Could the traditional name be restored? Any views?

It will always be UCG FTW
no matter what they call it

UCG does sound much better doesn't it. I find the older generation still refer to it as UCG. You could just call it Galway University, and when people ask 'which one', be snobby about it and say 'oh that lot in GMIT aren't a university'

Totally agree with returning the name to UCG. I never liked NUIG, too much of a mouthful. I thought I read in the SIN newspaper last year that one of Iggy's last wishes before he left was to have the name changed back. Obviously this didn't happen but it would be nice to see it called UCG again.

Ya i remember him saying that too!

It can be ya but with the cost of rebranding again they probably won't.

O Muircheartaigh was on Radio 1 quite a while ago, and said that it was a great mistake that they changed the name of the University to NUIG - I believe that was what was reported in Sin. I like NUIG... dunno, just sounds more pretentious that UCG :D

sure why not go the whole hog and call it Queens College Galway again?? Its just a name

I think that NUIG is a better name. Mainly because calling something university college is a bit like the new name for UCD: UCD Dublin. You're just repeating yourself.

This is probably the only thing that I don't agree with the Iggmyster General about.

I am till trying to make sense of this.

You do realise the UC in UCD stands for university college so you're ok with that for UCD but not UCG which is what is was before NUIG

I think he thinks that the uni is called 'UCD Dublin', which would be repetition in the same way 'PIN Number' is. As far as I know, it's just called 'UCD' or 'University College Dublin' though.

NUIM had the same problem, at first it was St Patricks College Maynooth, an affiliate of the NUI, then when the seminary and college were properly divided it became Maynooth College, an affiliate of the NUI, now it is a full University of the NUI, same as NUIG. When it was UCG it was just an affiliate college of the NUI.

By giving both Universities the NUIG and NUIM tag the Universities are acknowledging that they are no longer simple colleges of the University but fully fledged Universities in their own right. Of course I remember hearing that moron Joe Duffy give a talk at NUIM and on introducing himself to the audience saying "Of course, I went to Trinity College Dublin, a real University".

No, its actual name is 'UCD Dublin' or some minor variation like that. There is a UCD in the states and Dublin can't name themselves the same. Thats what my brother told me anyway, he studies up in UCD.

Your brother is wrong! See here. They call it either University College Dublin or UCD everywhere. They never call it UCD Dublin.

UCD is now UCD Dublin, look at the crest

UCG sounds better then NUIG in my opinion, plus it'll always be UCG to me as I grew up with that name.

    Read the link I posted.

EDIT: Also, if anyone, still doesn't believe me then I refer you to the Universities Act of 1997, particularly this page.
Constituent College [/B]Name of Constituent University[/B]

University College, Cork National University of Ireland, Cork; Ollscoil na hÉireann, Corcaigh
University College, Dublin National University of Ireland, Dublin; Ollscoil na hÉireann, Baile Átha Cliath
University College, Galway National University of Ireland, Galway; Ollscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh

I don't see UCD, Dublin there anywhere or University College Dublin, Dublin.

Also in relation to Trinity College, Dublin:
    "Trinity College" means the College of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Queen Elizabeth near Dublin established by charter dated the 3rd day of March, 1592, and shall be held to include the University of Dublin save where the context otherwise requires in accordance with the charters and letters patent relating to Trinity College;

"the University of Dublin" means the university established by the charters and letters patent incorporating Trinity College and which said university is further provided for by the letters patent of the 24th day of July, 1857

    Hope this helps.

EDIT 2: If the naming of the University as NUIG over UCG is the biggest problems any of you people have then I'll happily swap my problems for yours :D:D

That's just their logo. It should be read as "UCD. Dublin" rather than "UCD Dublin". If you look on the site, it just says University College Dublin!

a bit like the new name for UCD: UCD Dublin. You're just repeating yourself.

    You're joking.

    Srsly?

Maybe they could stop the morketing and rebranding exercise and pay the research staff their justified performance-related salary increases instead?
Better way to attract talented academics than a fscking retarded image update.

I disagree with the "University College" criticism though, afaik it's more correct as it is a union of colleges of schools. Same with RTC. Technical college, more practical learning, less reliance on theory (which I think quite a few courses in Nooig could do with more of).

By that logic, the National bit in National University of Ireland, Galway is also redundant. And shouldn't it be National University of 'Galway, Ireland'?

"OohCeeGee OOhCeeGee Pinta Pinta" or somesuchthing I glanced at on Sin years ago. Before my time. Ask JK or some other relic ;)

Ah yes the chant brings back memories of ISDA in UCD and a certain individual running on stage

Hence it should be UCG as it sounds better chanted:D

The name was changed to give a better brand to the uni outside of Ireland.

Most people don't know where Galway is, but have a better chance of knowing Ireland so National University of Ireland, Galway is a bit more recognisable.

For the record I went to both UCG and NUI Galway

Pg633 - Suggest that the name Galway is well known worldwide, and that there was no need to change the name.

You would be surprised how many people have never heard of us. For many Ireland = Dublin. Galway is only about 2% of the population of this country. 0.02% of the EU. For our size we are well known, but in the bigger picture we are unknown.
Try explaining Galway to some Chinese kids who have never even heard of Ireland.

Instead of pronouncing it "enn-yew-eye-galway" try "newig," Way easier to say, less cyllables than UCG too :D
