PS3 - 60Gig version versus 40Gig version.

I have an option to buy a new 60Gig unit or a 40Gig unit. Apart from playing PS2 games and having 20Gigs more space - is the 60Gig unit worth having?

    Thanks.

bought a ps3 online from american ebay . good bit cheaper than buying here or even on the uk ebay. the 60gb has usb ports in the front the 40gb doen't which is very hand for moving files from pc to ps3 and vice versa. The 60gb has wireless internet, 40gb cable only. with the 60gb there are endless possibilites in the future...e.g split the hardrive between ps3 gamesaves(20gb) and operatin gsystem(40gb) you can then install windows/ linux and you have a fully functioning pc can easily download programs for it (flash etc).

so in short the ps3 40gb is fine for gaming , if you want a bit more and want to get long term use go for the 60gb, would be my advice....

    Cool thanks.

What would be reasonable price for a new 60Gig unit?

a2dg is wrong on one thing on his list.
In short the 40GB PS3 compared to 60GB unit has 2 less USB ports, no PS2 BC & SuperAudio CD support.

40GB is gone off the market from this Friday replaced by 80GB unit with DualShock 3 as standard.

IMO, unless you like to play lots of PS2 games and no PS3 games, I would go for the new 80GB unit out this weekend as it includes DualShock 3 controller as standard.

Actually the 40gig does have usb ports on the front and wifi. you can still install linux on the 40. You can no longer buy the 60 gig in the shops.
I think the 80 gig model is coming out soon to replace the 40 gig here.

Thanks - and what about the WIFI ability?

Any idea on what the 80Gig unit will cost?

Im not that worried about PS2 - just have one in the house and the kids have a good few games for it still - they can just keep using the PS2 if required - so thats not the main concern - its really about which of the units are better and what the 60Gig unit might be worth.

I have access to at least 1 new 60 Gig which is an unsold unit in Ireland - so that option is open.

unless you can get the 60 gig much cheaper you might aswell get the new 80 gig model , this is the only one that comes with a Dual shock 3 as standard .
if you dont care about the ps2 games theres very little difference,
60 gig has a card reader too if thats of any interest.

i got mine for 510 with two games both new(gta + pes8) and a two pads both new one being a white dualshock 3. u could split the hard drive with the 40gb but its hardly enough . as for the 60gb/80gb debate its on all about price imo , id say take the 60gb if ur getting a deal on it , if u need extra gb later there always external hardrive...and u can get the dualshock pad online for 35 euro.....

Does anyone know anywhere in Dublin you can get a 60GB? New or second hand, they don't seem to have 2nd hand ones in Game on Dawson St anymore.

80GB will be €400, like all PS3 released in Europe has WiFi.

Thanks - probably no reason to go for this 60 Gig then as it is more expensive.

people mentioned BC, 2 more USB slots, and card reader but forgot to mention architecture difference between old 60gig and 40gig/80gig.

60gig versions produced with 90nm and this causes more power consumption and more heat, but new ones produced with 65nm. This means less power consumption/less heat. 120/140watt for new ones and 180/200watts for old ones.

    detailed comparisons

Other way around, the old 60GB units seem to be having Blu-Ray issues.

ya sure over on ps3.ie most of them failin were 40gb's

If I remember the poll here a while ago, most of the failing PS3s were the original 60GB versions.

Well done on buying a 60gb PS3, doesn't mean you get to make up random sh*t about the 40gb model

When I first bought my PS3 (60GB), there weren't too many really good games for it so BC for PS2 games was very handy.

The 40GB version is fine now as there are more quality games, but as stated above, if you're getting a PS3, wait for Friday and get the 80GB version with the DualShock 3.

My solution to a similar dilemna was to buy the 40GB one, spend 52€ to upgrade the disk to a 160GB one, and keep my PS2 Slim next to the PS3. The only thing that is missing are the two USB ports (who needs a card reader?).
