Outta of boredom with the weather, I am wondering does anyone here know of the location of shipwrecks anywhere in Ireland.

Preferably aground on coasts as I have no experience diving.

like the plassey ship, from the opening credits of father ted.

Think I saw a wreck on one of the Aran Islands before, IIRC.

Can't remember which island offhand - Inis Thiar I think.

Inis Oir, that's the one at the start of Father Ted. Not much left of it apart from a big lump of metal

Like a problem is that with shipwrecks on the coastline, the wave action tends to smash them up, so they don't last too long unlike ships on the sea bed which in the case of a wooden ship under the right conditions may last for centuries.

Possibly a more fruitful project if you are interested in wrecks is going looking for aircraft wrecks in that alloy parts tend to last and if an aircraft has a major crash, it will scatter a good deal of wreckage about the place, NB If in doubt don't touch anything as e.g. military aircraft could have been carrying explosives and civilian aircraft could have had un-pleasant things on them too.

There is a website with GPS locations for wrecks around the coast of Ireland, I do off shore fishing and found it a while back. Let me have a root around for it again.........................found it.

    http://www.irishwrecksonline.net/

Not sure how accurate the GPS marks are as on one fishing website I frequent they said one or two of em on the east coast were miles off but its a good starter I suppose.

Isn't there the guts of an armada off Spanish Point in Clare?

Remember that show about the boat on RTE that crashed? you could go looking for the people that were on it.

I'd start with your local abrakebabra

Its for divers so maybe the only wrecks it would have would be underwater, I suppose the only exception to that would be wrecks that might un-covered at low tide.

I think this one The Lady Lansdowne was broken up and buried by a dredger in recent years.

San Marcus Went to pieces on the rocks in 1588 doubt theres much left to see now

Part of this wreck from 1947 Okeanos is still visable near kilcredaun lighthouse Carrigaholt
The Plassy still sits on the rocks on Inis Oirr

    A few good sites
Irish Shipwrecks database lists shipwrecks all around the Irish coast.

Wexford shiprecks stretching from ancient to modern times

    Shipwrecks on the saltee Islands

Shipwrecks of Dún Laoghaire Harbour and Dublin Bay

Slightly smaller scale but the Shannon Queen (that hive of hedonism ;) in the 60's and 70's ) sunk close to the Bridge in Athlone. Don't know if she made her way to Hammond Lane.

There's the RMS Leinster in Dublin bay, interesting story behind that one it was sunk by a german U-boat, and a good few around Wexford too.

Edit: Sorry didn't see the "I don't want to dive" bit...so that pretty much cancels above post....still :)

    The beach in Howth.

At low tide you can see the remains of a boat or something.

Not far off the coast, about an eigth of the way out to Ireland's Eye
