Philips VOIP 433

:( Just bought a Philips VOIP 433 and it seems to have been a mistake. Power City are offering the combined PSTN/VOIP DECT phone for €29.99. Seems too good to be true?

In a way, it is. As a straightforward DECT phone with a colour screen it's a very good price, but if you're thinking about buying it as a VOIP phone... don't.

It works only with MS Messenger. Now if you've got a stack of friends who spend their entire lives attached to their PCs and you spend lots of money calling them, then maybe you might have some use for this, but that's all it will do.

The box claims "Cheap calls to standard phone numbers via Windows Live Call", unfortunately this is not true. It appears that Microsoft originally did a deal with Verizon for dial-out capability, but it seems not to have worked out and it's no longer available. Existing subscribers will be cut off from the 1st of September next.

All may not be entirely lost however, as there is a tie-up between MS and Yahoo! Messenger; (forgive my ignorance here, but I'm not up to speed on this) Yahoo! Messenger offers dial-out via Yahoo! Voice. Can the 433 be used to connect to Yahoo! Voice? - I don't know.

Microsoft say: "With Windows Live Messenger, you can connect with your Yahoo! Messenger with Voice contacts"; but can that be extended to dialling out via Yahoo!?

Anyone out there know the answer?
