I know it's still Summer but these last two weeks have given me a bit of a taste for what running throughout the winter might be like! So I was wondering what the best clothes for running in the cold and rain are. I presume it's better to wear more than just shorts and tshirt. Maybe long sleeved top and leggings?

For me, it would want to be extremly cold to wear leggings, it would usually be shorts. On top a tight t-shirt or body armour and a long sleeved top over that. Really its only the first few minutes of a run i'd put more layers on for, after a while you'd heat up.

In very cold and windy weather you should protect your legs. Runners' tights are great for this. Something light and windproof on top, and don't forget your head, though you probably have a good head of hair.

I swear by a few long sleeved Helly Hansen tops I have which are suitable for all sorts of weather.

I usually wear a singlet under a long sleeve, or under a t shirt and then I also wear gloves. If your hands freeze, as mine do if it drops below about 13 degrees gloves are a must. Cheap Penneys ones are best because if you do begin to over heat they can be thrown away without too much thought

For someone like me who's used to running in tracksuit bottoms (can't really wear shorts due to some scarring on my legs) - what should I be looking to do as it comes into the winter? I normally just wear a t-shirt with tracksuit bottoms, and I have a very light jacket that can be worn in the rain too.

Another place to keep an eye on is Aldi or Lidl... shops like that they sometimes sell running tights and other clothing for cyclists on the cheap and cheerful which I don't mind if they get torn or destroyed. I'm sure they'll have some soon with the real "winter" setting in.

    :D

Lidl had the running gear in last Thursday. I got a jacket and a short-sleeved training top.

I use a nike clima-fit zip up jacket when its raining, its quite lite and has good those mesh bits under the arms/at back to let air in. It keeps most, if not all the rain out. I got it in the Nike outlet shop in Killarney, they often have good running gear at knock down prices.

I bought the jacket, and took it for a test run on Saturday morning. OK, so the conditions were absolutely horrid, but the jacket did a really good job of keeping the rain in, and wicking all of the heat out.

I'm sure it's perfectly OK for good conditions, but not a jacket for very poor weather. But what do you expect for 12 euro. I'm sure I will use it during the winter, when I need a little more warmth. Also, at the price, you don't mind throwing it away in a race.

Do you feel it is important to protect the legs in cold weather? I have an all-weather shorts person up to now which maybe is not a good idea.

Last year I ran in a pair of track bottoms from pennys (synthetic material not cotton) and a long sleeve wicked top. I might wear a rain jacket, gloves and hat to start but within 5 mins I was taking layers off. Having said that I found it good to wear the layers at the beginning to heat up. I hate being too cold starting off as I don't warm up properly.

I saw a few pairs of 3/4 length running leggings in Elverys yesterday so am thinking I'll get a pair of those for the winter months.
