I was doing a fresh install of windows over the weekend. I have the sata drivers on a floppy but no floppy drive on my machine. I ended up putting the drivers onto a USB key and hoped this would work by hiting the F6 key when installing windows but it did not.

Will do a google later on when i get home.
But just wanted to ask what im doing wrong ? might be something stupid and simple.

You have a couple of options.

1 is to use another PC and nLite to build your own Windows XP CD with the SATA drivers built in. I'm assuming XP here because Vista supports SATA out of the box.

2 is to get a more recent XP CD. Afaik the ones with SP2 integrated have SATA support built in.

3 is to temporarily install a floppy drive or get a USB floppy drive.

4 depends on your motherboard. Some motherboards allow you to set their SATA controllers to run in legacy mode, where they emulate IDE. This will make it compatible with older stuff such as the Windows XP installer but you will lose a few of SATA's bells and whistles like native command queueing and hot swapping.
