Just picked up a Dell XPS 420... Did a clean install of Vista last night. Its grand apart from the HD is near always active. I disabled the indexing on the HD but it didn't make much difference...

Is there anything else??? Never used Vista before so not sure if there's something else I should be looking for...

I noticed mine does the same even with indexing off also. Not to the same extent as when indexing was on but I do hear it working away even when not in use.

Assumed it was Vista doing whatever Vista does.

Vista is usually busy for the first few days with indexing and other bits and bobs. I find its grand after that.

It will do this for a week or two and after that stop. Be sure you get SP1 fairly soon as well btw.

super fetch does it too as it loads the most commonly used apps into memory.

If you type indexing options in2 the Vista search box it'll bring up a menu to which volumes you'd like to add to the index. It'll take anything from a day to a few days to index all your files, then this activity will stop (unless your constantly adding big volumes of files). Indexing speeds up searches, just start typing part of a file name in2 this search box and it'll instantly appear in the search results. This is one of the great new features of Vista. You can use the search box for finding programs also, just type "calc" and Calculator will show in the results, very handy, no more scrolling down through all programs.

Prefetch is great also, Vista monitors your computing habits and caches the stuff you use the most. If you usually start WMP at 6 o'clock after you come in from work every evening. it will pre-load it and have it ready, it loads the things it thinks you might use. Click firefox or something you use regularly and see how fast it loads, cos its already cached. Its pointless having 4GB ram sitting idle, might as well fill it.

Vista takes getting used to, but after a while You'll love it.

Superfetch, Indexing, Defrag. Vista does all 3 without your input as background services. For the first few days it will be doing things like indexing and defragging much more often. If you want to speed up the process you can leave the machine on overnight with the manual defrag running and that will make it a higher priority process. after that Vista is scheduled by default to run passive defrag everyday at 3am.
