I was lucky enough to be introduced to this great band recently (only 10 years too late!) and I've been completely hooked on the "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea".

Has anyone got any more suggestions of music along these lines?

Sunset Rubdown would be the first one everybody points at, I think, and Wolf Parade too for that matter...

I'm actually not a huge NMH fan myself, but all the bands I love seem to love them, so I guess I appreciate their influence. :D

I think The Decemberists are kinda similar (but not as good).

I'd recommend checking out some of the other Elephant 6 bands.

I love Olivia Tremor Control and Apples in Stereo.
Of Montreal, Elf Power, Beulah all well worth a listen.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.I'm checking them out.

lol, Last.fm is always my first port of call, but I find it a bit iffy sometimes with similar artists!

Check out A Hawk and a Hacksaw, it's the ex-drummer for NMH and a violin player. The album "AHAAH & The Hun Hungar Ensemble" is great, it's Balkan / eastern European folk music.

Seconding Sunset Rubdown and Wolf Parade because they're great.

Love it, apart from the awful trumpet solo in the middle :o

just for the record, for my money, aeroplane over the sea is one of the finest albums ever recorded, it's wonderful beyond belief. I keep coming back to it.

Can't stand NMH, I find them soulsuckingly dull.

See also The Mountain Goats and Apples in Stereo. Definitely The Apples in Stereo. There's some connection between AIS and NMH. I think someone in AIS produced a Jeff Mangum album.

I'm presuming Jeff Mangum's stuff would be worth checking out if you like NMH. He's dabbled in a lot of Bulgarian folk and indie recently.

Robert Schneider from AIS produced In The Aeroplane...
Their own stuff is quite different though, much poppier.

Mangum hasn't done anything in quite a while though. I think his only solo release was a live album of NMH stuff ages ago, off the radar since...

After getting into Neutral Milk Hotel, spose the next thing is the other elephant 6 records. Of Montreal very good and Oliva Tremor Control - dusk at cubist castle is great. Nothing quite as good as In the Aeroplane over the sea that said.

Check out Love's album 'Forever Changes', they always struck me as being a big influence on NMH. 'In the Aeroplane' is a great tune.

I love In an Aeroplane over the sea. Can anyone tell me if their other album is worth getting?

There's a few really good tracks on the other album, if you like Aeroplane it's worth getting, and the ep is alright-ish.

Yes On Avery Island is worth getting for 'A Baby For Pree' alone!

Check out Mangum's live solo recordings also. Live a Jittery Joe's and Live at Aquarius Records are excellent

Jesse Lacey of new York outfit Brand New cites this 'aeroplane' album by NMH as 'the most beautiful record ever written' or something along those lines.
praise indeed from one of the better lyric writers I've come across !
    ;)

i would recommend the american analog set, kinda similar in ways
they've broken up now but 'set free' in particular is an amazing album
'know by heart' and 'promise of love' are both really strong too
