Change of career

    Hi all,
as above in middle of changing careers after 10 yrs in hospitality business. Place I am currently working in is closing due to "market conditions". Whilst I was caught in earning money for job I am good at but hate, I now have chance to change career when in both, suits me and my employer(am stupidly loyal) so at the moment am looking for a total change of career cos in fairness bcos of a total change of personal values since starting this career(have a 5 yr old daughter, fiancee, house in need of total renovation) I now need something different but bcos of aforementioned commitments needs to be fairly well paying at the same time. As a rough guide am on around €35k at the mo but am willing to take a bit of a cut for a job I would actually like.

    My questions(in a short yes/no) are as follows;

1)Aldi are top of my list at mo. Have read all previous posts bout them but compared to what I am coming out of seems like a piece of píss. Can they really be that bad? P.S.(trainee assistant manager bcos am realist and know I have no retail experience whatsoever even though have what I would call relevant experience from hospitality industry)

2)What other careers could I venture into?

I think Aldi is a good move actually however you might not get to see your children much given the hours.

Good Luck in your search :)

Well, you should certainly stay clear of ''teaching kids to read good''.

I was not going to say anything as its not that unusual for some people to have bad grammar and also want a job at some point. But it's the choice of username that had me asking questions.

    Lol,
dont worry bout user name. just have weird sense of humour;) Tis serious question. I know ppl say grass is greener other side of the hill, etc but am really hands-on type person who has to see for themselves. Am really stuck for career choice at mo so will be driving pizza's for baby brother for while(mortgage, etc.). Just wondering how long Aldi take to get back to you whether\which?

I don't know what people you have been speaking to but most people would actually say "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence". I don't belive there are any hills involved.

And you should really sort out the spelling and grammer before you do anything.

Regarding Aldi, I have heard a lot of things about working for them and being "a piece of piss" isn't one of them. The reason they offer such a high salary is becuase they are tough to work for. So expect extremely long hours with not much thanks. I think a more relevant term to use would be "say goodbye to your private life". But besides that I would say go for it, what have you got to lose.

Thats the kind of work environment that I am coming out of though, hence my comments. By no means do I expect it to be easy but as an example in my current job I could be working a 15 hour day with lunch/dinner being eaten over the sink cos cant afford to leave the bar even for a couple of minutes. I get random phone calls on days off to come in for a few hours. That kind of thing. Is there any other industry that ye could suggest for me? Any advice is appreciated.

Maybe you should steer clear of this thread and head off to After Hours.

    Hi again,
so finished off C.V. and applied for aldi today. How long should I be expecting to wait to hear back from them? Retail management seems to be industry my skills are suited for so it is the only one I am really focusing on at the moment but I really would appreciate any other suggestions. My gf suggested a commercial bank by cork airport(not sure if allowed mention it specifically) that are looking for staff and has no set criteria regarding qualifications. Other than that I am relegated to looking for trainee management positions in various industries that I have absolutely no idea about. Can anyone help?

P.S. Read comments about my username and "cuntpants". Whilst I regarded my name as tongue-in-cheek weird type of humour, I have nothing but disdain for his. I use mine in the same sense as "Biggus Dickus"(Life of Brian), etc. not meant to be offensive, treated seriously, etc. Use a totally different mail address for official stuff. Please do not associate me or my username with him again.

Perhaps you should take some of your own advice - it's grammar, not grammer.

What about marketing or events management? Your experience might be applicable.

Thank you Tom Dunne. Yeah didnt wanna say that but saw all the mistakes in my post and the fact that people actually focused on them rather than my my request was annoying to say the least. It is a genuine request and I really am looking for a new career ASAP because with a mortgage, 5 yr old, nothing is cheap.
