Do you require an active phone line to install Sky?

So here's the story.. am moving into a new house in the next week and a half - I'm renting the place.

There is a phone-line there but the landlord has no notion of whether it's activated, or needs to be reconnected or anything. So we've put in a request with BT to find out (praying it's simply in-active and we pay a €25 fee to re-activate, as opposed to disconnected which is a lovely €122 fee for re-connection).

Anyways.. back to the point, I wanna order Sky Digital before the end of the month as they have the promotion right now for a Sky+ box for €49 that finishes at the end of the month.. odds probably that it'll be renewed but don't wanna take the chance!

But the phone line may not be active when I order, the best I can put Sky off is a week or two if I order before the end of the month.. and the average wait if it's a re-connection is 3 - 4 weeks.

So my question is will Sky carry out the installation if the phone line is not yet active? Don't want to call out a guy only for him to say he won't install it without an active phone line.

No phoneline neccessary for single box installation, but mandatory for Multiroom.

An extra one-off levy of €37.50 will apply for NPL (no phoneline) installation. However, that'd be cheaper than 2 months line rental, if you didn't really need the landline.

    Cheers byte.

There is a phone-line installed alright - box and line present - but we're just unsure if it'll be active when they come to install it. Do you know if the NPL will apply if the line is installed but not yet active?

Phone-line is a necissity I'm afraid due a distinct lack of decent Wireles BB providers in Sligo.

    Balls...!

Cheers Tony. Hopefully the line just needs to be activated (3 - 4 days), and not reconnected (2 - 3 weeks) so.

Will let ye know how I get on when I get moved in and sorted!

Multiroom needs the phoneline (all boxes on the same phone line) so they can track the boxes and make sure they're all at the same address (and not shipped off to a friend's/relative's house for a cheap subscription). These "phone home" calls are to an Irish freephone number.

Standard/Sky+ single box installations don't "need" the phone line. Sky just force it as a condition to encourage you to use the online services and Sky Box Office as a way to offset the cost of subsidising the box to you. The cost of these online services vary (Sky account services are generally free, but other games/betting/etc. services cost from a local call upwards).

    Hello,

Can you tell more about the wireless system for the telephone point. Brother wants to get SKY+ and Mutliroom but has not telephone point at main TV or sunroom. This sounds like a way around it.

One of these is what you would require. They work well enough

Just an update on this lads..

Only need to activate my phone line so that's up and running.

Ordered Sky last week.. and the earliest installation date on a weekend they could give me was the end of September, so provisionally it's being installed on September 8th.

    Hurrah!

I thought I'd resurrect this rather than start a new thread.

I currently have a standard Sky box.

I'm having a Sky HD box installed tomorrow, moving the current 9 year old Panasonic Sky box to another room and availing of Multiroom. I have run 'temporary' phone lines to each location. The temporary phone lines worked (I tested them with my old dial-up modem). If I remove these temporary phone lines after the boxes are installed, will this have any future implications?

Yes you may be charged full price on the multiroom boxes.

Ah right. It looks like I'll have to make those temporary lines a little more permenant.

    Thanks.

    Hey Guys,

    Byte,
What about Sky HD + box without a phoneline, I'm renting an apartment but don't want to have to get a phone connection just for sky! Is this a go?

    Thanks

    Thanks John,

Ok so I get Sky subscription and in six months I move, can I take with me my equipment, reinstall at next house and carry on or do I need to notify sky!?
Will the box know its been moved or can the dish be re-positioned easily?
Sorry if this dealt with in another thread!

    Thanks
