What are the regualations with this as my gf is interested. Are all requests given and do you have to be in the job a minimum amount of time.

Can you take unpaid leave as well if you cant take a longer career break? Say if you needed to be somewhere away from your job for 2 months.

Its different in different areas so she'd have to check the rules.

Where i am you can apply once your probation is up (mine was 6 months). All requests are not granted, certainly in my place there is talk of a crackdown on career breaks. Also where i work there is a minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 5 years for a career break. If you take a one year career break and decide you actually want to come back after 6 months you can't, you have to wait the year.

When you return from your career break you are not guaranteed the same job. You will be offered (when it becomes available) a position at the same grade but it could be a totally different job. If no vacancy exists at your grade then you can accept a job at a lower grade or wait until one becomes available at your grade.

Unpaid leave is at the discretion of HR subject to approval from your manager.
