    Minister Gormley promises flood guidelines
Environment Minister John Gormley said today that his department will issue guidelines on flooding in the coming weeks.

The minister is in Carlow this evening to assess the damage caused by severe flooding in the town.

Parts of Carlow were submerged in almost 2m of water when the River Barrow burst its banks after heavy rain and flash flooding this weekend.

More than 100 people had to be evacuated from their homes near the river banks and several streets were closed.

Local authorities are meeting tonight to discuss the implementation of urgent flood relief projects.

Minister Gormley also said that building on flood plains would have to be stopped.

The local authorities are the ones partly to blame as they allowed re-zoning of the land in question first day.
However the pressure on LA finances mean that they have to try and maximise their income stream by allowing this kind of idiotic development.
I wonder if the residents/people involved have a case against the engineers who signed off on the developments?

I think those engineers sign off when Planning Permission is fully complied with and if there is nothing in it about flooding then the residents wouldn't have a snowballs!

The professional planners in local authorities were well aware of it and made their concerns known over the years. It was the dodgy/visionless politicians who ingored and over-ruled them.

Yup. Planners come in for blame on so many things by people who seem to have no concept of how the process operates.
