hope this is the right forum to post this i know sweet fa about pcs
lately my pc keeps shutting down, the tower starts makes a clicking noise and a blue screen appears with the following info appears, and the only way i know how to get out of this page is to turn the power off at the socket and then restart the pc which i imagine isnt a good thing

windows has shut down and beginning a physical memory dump

    KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR

it then refers to any new hardware i have added (which i havent) may not be installed correctly and to re install it

then there is the technical information

    STOP:0x00000077(0xC000000E,0xC000000E,0x00000000,0x0EFA0000)

i also am having trouble with internet explorer i keep getting the message ie has encountered a problem and needs to close, this can happen at any time e.g opening the browser the message comes up or in the middle of a session
i ran the pc health check that is in the malware topic but had the problem again this morning
i dont think the 2 problems are connected as ie problem has been ongoing for a while and i have just lived with it. recently i noticed that safari was on my desktop and started using it instead, i did not download it and can omly assume that when i downloaded itunes it then downloaded safari, i removed this last week thinking maybe this was causing the problm but no change

its a dell dimension 4700 with XP home edition version 2002 i hope this is enough info

any help would be greatly appreciated

That is a hard drive failure. The error codes plus the ticking sound are almost certain sounds of a permanent failure.

is it worth replacing? that depends on the system its driving. a new drive can cost under 100 euro and about a days worth of nerdy efforts.

yes it looks like a dying hard drive alright.........loud ticking/loud clicking sounds usually mean impending death to a hard drive.

using your windows disk boot to the windows setup (first stage) and press r to enter the repair console.... then when dos loads type press 1 for your cdrive and log on using your administer password (if you have a password) then once in dos type "chkdsk /r" without the quotes and let it scan. it will scan and try repair any bad sectors & file index/integrity errors on your disk. if you get a scan failure your drive is fecked... there are hard drive diagnostics software that can analyse your hard drive (Seagate tools is such software thats free). if you can plug your drive into another pc then do so and backup your personal stuff. then using seagate tools scan the drive. or alternatively create a boot cd using seagate tools and boot to it on your own pc and run the scan

replacing your hard drive is easy and you will need to reinstall windows on your new drive....BUT before you through away the dying one set it up as a slave (secondary) drive so you can try salvage as much of your files as possible by copying them to the new drive. (dont bother try clone the drive as your system files may already be corrupt hence crashes) just copy all your user files to the new drive.... reinstall your software and move on.... btw 512mb ram is a bit low... for less than €100 you could add 2gb ram to it which would dramatically improve your pc's performance.

try internet explorer 7 with no addons enabled... if it doesnt crash then one of your plugins is causing the crashes... you'll have to then try disabling them one by one until ya find the culprit...once found uninstall it

overheal thanks ,but when you say system what do you mean exactly ,i dont know much about pcs does this info help

windows xp home ed 2002 sevice pack 2

    INTEL(R)
    pentium(R)4 CPU 3.00GHZ 2.99GHz 512MB RAM
I mean do you feel its worth spending 100 euro and a couple days worth of effort to get the machine running again, versus spending a few hundred euro getting a brand new machine. that call is yours. that system sounds like it still has some life left in it, but not much.

    thanks for your help people

i read the manual this afternoon which ran through some diagnostic checks with the cd and what did come up was

expected fan on high rpm of 3600 detected fan rpm of 1784

is it likely that the pc is shutting down to prevent it from overheating ?

otherwise its the doctor anyone know of decent repairers in the dunlaoghaire area

    cheers
