Just watched this again last night, still as brilliantly frightening and haunting as ever. Almost had a stroke the first time I watched it, age 13. Hard to believe it was directed by the same man responsible for the abortion that was AVP.

Anyone aware of any other similarly themed movies? Ghost Ship springs to mind, but....well, that's absolutely crap so let's not go there.

    Lost in Space, woooh! (joke)
No other movies spring to mind, but the game Dead Space is supposed to be like it...looking forward to it =D

Yeah it is a suprisingly atmospheric and creepy film, considering the 'talent' behind it. Holds up well. As for similarly themed movies, Sunshine, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Alien were very close in terms of content and concerns. Also, theres a really good short animé in the Memories collection called 'Magnetic Rose' which has a very similiar premises, but creates is a bit more imaginative and probing than Event Horizon.

yeah its a great movie, apparantly they cut out a lot of it and fans have been hoping for a directors cut to make an appearance on DVD, but no such luck so far. As mentioned Sunshine was similar to it I would say ripped it off in places. But some great shock moments in Event Horizon.

Loved it the first time I saw it, decided to watch it again when it was on TV recently and thought it was a load of ****. Don't know what changed my mind about it but didn't rate it at all the second time.

Yeah, Sunshine rips off pretty much every 'intelligent' sci-fi of recent years: but for more of the same type of stuff, is an enjoyable but ultimately unorginal diversion.

Ya sometimes tastes just chage over years, Films that i loved in my early teens i just know i would rip to bits now cause i suppose i've seen more films or better films from the same genre.

In saying that i still think event horizon is class.

I saw on Event on TV fully aware of it not having a decent rep but I loved its hand-me-down/reheated list of cliches and the superb visuals/sound (apart from the awful music by Orbital).

I think it's a great film except for one bit that really pisses me off. When
the Louis & Clark explodes and the guy gets sent off into space, but survives and flies back to the ship.
    I know it's a Sci-Fi, but that was just f*cking ridiculous.

Since you mentioned Ghost Ship, I might as well suggest Virus (mediocre, but has it's moments) and Deep Rising. Deep Rising, in particular is a great laugh as long as you're not willing to take it too serious.

And if you get a chance, try and find the original script for Ghost ship, to read. Apparently, all the actors read it and signed up for the film, but then the producers didn't like it and changed it completely. It's a much better and scarier story than the film.

er Lewis and Clark (Louis and Clarke is nearly something else again!)

It's been a while since I've seen it but I hated Event Horizon. I loved Sunshine though, nothing groundbreaking plot-wise but Boyle's direction and the fact that it was made outside Hollywood gave it a very different flavour.

+1 Humanji, the character was pretty rubbish and stereotypical aswell.
It's like the scene belonged to a different film, one with a comedic aspect.

D'oh! And I was specifically trying not to spell it like the tv show.

Exactly. It really didn't fit in at all.

Also a fan of sunshine, I liked the score as well, very visceral movie. Let down perhaps by its concession to slasher movie at the end. But still, stays in your mind after you see it.

There is an element of the slasher to it all right but there's also an Apocalypse Now/Heart of Darkness vibe to it. Pinbacker is a very Kurtz-like character. Danny Boyle and Alex Garland (the writer) are both big fans of Apocalypse Now and there's been several references to it in the 3 films they've done together.

Tis a fabulous film. Sam Neill and Larry Fishburn (sp) put in good performances. Scares the sh1t outta me as a kid.

Saw it years ago with Sam Neill still in my head as 'the guy from Jurassic park, he's a spot-on guy'... then Event Horizon happened.

...holy f*ck, i didn't sleep so well for a while after that. Bought it with an air of nostalgia a year ago and i still like it. It's not as scary as back then obviously, but showing it to other folks is pretty good. In the right state of mind it can be a pretty scary film.

I remember seeing this as a late night RTE2 special back in the days before you had every channel imagineable. Never heard of it nor did I expect what I saw. I dunno why I watched it actually but I'm glad I did.

I thought Sam Neil had to be a good guy too I couldn't believe it! Watched most of it from behind the couch.

I remember everyone talking about it the next week in college, everyone was wondering why they'd never heard of it.

    Thought Event Horizon was great.

Solaris is similar in a way, I really liked it.

I also really like Sunshine, the big shots of the sun were pretty impressive in the cinema. But it pissed me off
when that guy turned in to a monster in the end and it just turned in to some crappy alien chase flick : (

I actually liked that aspect of Sunshine. That guy freaked the sh1t out of me!

Yeah, Sunshine is a favorite of mine, loved that movie. Thanks for all the suggestions, have seen everything aside from Solaris and Magnetic Rose which both sound like a worthwhile watch.

Russian Solaris is hard going, but worth a watch even if it isn't as good as the other Tarkofsky films. The American remake is decent and is on TV this week if you have Film Four.

Magnetic Rose is excellent, the other animations on the same DVD are great too, worth a purchase.

well i suppose "sphere" was supposed to be a bit of a ripp off of it so i suppose you could look at that but TBH its so long since i seen that i cant remember if it was any good or not :D and i'd second virus as being in the same vein

sam neil was indeed one scary bastard in event horizon . the bit where he slowly slips back into the darkness talking chillingly raised the hairs on the back of me neck.

the only other film i can think of isnt really in the same genre but i suppose you could do worse than slap on "the thing". scared the bollocks off me as a kid and the suspense STILL holds up, the scene with the petri dishes in particular, and its got the same isolated claustrophobia going on.

Check out Silent Running, a sci fi movie from the early seventies with Bruce Dern.

Eh, he didn't turn into a monster. His skin had gone all toasty due to the 7 years in space looking at the sun. Plus he was just doing god's work - he was misunderstood like. ;)

Silent Running is a brilliant looking film (esp for a million bucks in 1971) but you may need a strong stomach when Joan Baez starts warbling about peace and love. Oh and the science is terrible.

    Mike.

But the best it about the movie are the robots.
It's mostly a film to show to kids to make them cry :D

If anything Event Horizon would of been a rip off of Sphere. Michael Crichton wrote Sphere in 1987.

Great film, i remember stumbling on it late one night on BBC which made it add free. So so closterfobic it was unreal! I felt a sense of relief to see the end credits, havn't watches it since mind!

I decided to watch this when I was younger and in the house by myself, because I thought it was just a space movie. Oh, the horror...! I actually never watched the end, I was too freaked out

  • Site Banned Posts: 5,676 ✭✭✭jayteecork

Wonder how this holds up today.

    Haven't seen it in yonks.

I remember Sam Neil going "Where we're going we don't need eyes to see" with his eyeballs in his hands!

Freaky movie, im sure its still cheesy but id doubt its lost its scare factor at all.
I agree with post on copying "Sphere" the novel.
But it copied lots i thought too a bit of alien in there too.

Loved it in 1997/8 whenever it was out! Want to watch it now
