I just accepted my offer for TCD today so I'm just wondering what's the story about applying for Halls? Do you just email them or something?

Anyone else here thinking of applying for Halls?

Can't remember what I wrote but I think in general just say if your part of any clubs, sports etc, good natured person etc. Say if a sibling stayed there previously.

*Don't* say your there to party

Does anyone know when they confirm your place in the halls? I just made an application there, and paid a deposit and all that. But it would be nice to know whether or not I got the place , because if I didn't I would like to start searching for alternative accomodation.

"A list of ID numbers of successful applicants will be posted on this webpage before 5pm on Thursday the 28th of August and formal written offers will follow shortly afterwards."

    From here.

I'm writing my application now too ._.

I got rooms on campus, so I suppose what I wrote in my supporting statement box was impressive!

Basically, Bull about how you will add to college life, ie sport, societies. They dont want people to live in hall or on campus that just go to lectures.

    Thats my 2 cents

    See my updated post ^

I guess they have a lot of applicants to sort through..

oh noes, my 'support' section was very meagre indeed.

As far as contributing goes all I mentioned was making friends. Otherwise the rest of it was just "the prospectus said there were rooms reserved for 1st years who are not local to trinity, that is me". I find the whole thing unbearably annoying though tbh. "what are your hobbies?" nonna yer damn business square!.... would be my regular response. I suppuse it's not unbearable , but it does seem ridiculous that they are essentially testing "shool spirit" as a means to sort who gets accomodation.

Are people actually reaching (or coming close to) the limits?

I got just over 300 for hobbies and I'm struggling with the support statement. Feels like school all over again.

irishpacker, are you a first year? isn't it extremely rare for first years to get on-campus accom?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,699 ✭✭✭Brian

Yeah, this is even worse than writing a CV in terms of "I sound like such a berk"ness.

I've got just over 1000 for my supporting, starting my Hobbies section now.

Ah wtf? are ye serious? oooh crap..... mine is probably like 12 words or something. Can you do it again?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,699 ✭✭✭Brian

    I don't think so, sorry :/

Maybe you could contact the Accomodation people and ask them to ignore your first application?

I wish I was a first year again! You have no idea what a piss up the freshman years are! I'm in 4th and final year, thats why I'm on campus. Seriously though, just talk about how much you'll contribute to trinity and you're a shoe in

Just realised it states "Characters"....I was counting words....:o

    irishpacker, cheers for the tips.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,629 ✭✭✭raah!

Does it say you need a certain amount of characters? I tried to look at the application again but I couldn't.... if it does I may be in a bit of a pickle

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 156 ✭✭Riotguy

    Yeah it's "___ Characters Max".

Actioully a huge ammount of accommodation is given to the first years cause they are new Trinity.

Accommodation is given to a huge number of first/second years, but it's in Halls not 'on campus' as you'd think of 'on campus'.

Just bull**** for the application as best you can. write on how you want to join this society and that club and how you were the year head or on student council or used to help out in an old granny home (if you did any of those things). If you live far away from dub your pretty much sorted but it's still worth writing some crap like "oh i feel that living of other students in the same situation as me in a strange city will help me settle in :(:(" or something like that

It's not first come first serve is it?

I am not 100% whether I am going to college this year so would ideally take a few days to mull it over, but if it first come first serve I may do my Halls application tomorrow.

So, is it? or would I be grand to do it in the next few days?

    Ah, I do remember!
Ironically, I will be buying a new pc soon (laptop though)
    How did it serve you?

Anyone else confirm that it isn't first come first serve? Would put my mind at rest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,699 ✭✭✭Brian

It says that it is not first come first served on the Halls' website. You're in the clear.

Nice one, thanks very much. Gives me a few days to have a think.

Alright, it's not usual for a first year to get on campus accommodation.

I am writing my application now,

What exactly IS the criteria for room allocation? I am writing mainly about why Trinity Halls is perfect for me to live in, not necessarily about how I fit in there.

    Any ideas?

    Hello Timans.
I actually rang up the accomodation office about this myself. The woman who answered didnt seem to know the answer but she said to write about why you deserve a place in trinity hall.

I just spoke about how i was looking forward to joining the clubs and societies and making many new friends. And then I went on to mention how far away from Dublin I was living and how I have no relations or support in Dublin.

    Hope this helps!!! :)

    Nice one, cheers.

I'm just writing the usual, good way of meeting people, being far away from Dublin, as I am quite young it's a good way to initally live away from home etc.

    Thanks again.

    No problem!
Hope everything works out for you in the end.

Can anyone tell me if the standard rooms are really as primitive as the TCD website describes them???

How many people would be sharing these communal kitchen and bathroom areas???
