Canwest was responsible for the setting up of TV3 back in 1998. They sold TV3 back in 2006, and to be honest it's worked out well for the broadcaster that the unimaginative canadian company left the Island (I think they also sold their stake in UTV). IMO Canwest was the one and only reason holding back TV3.

TV3 are slow to improve their schedule and I will always totally deride their Irish Productions as little more then state funding triva (bar a few such as the BOX and Inside and Out, and now The Apprentice; plain commerical triva). But since 2006 and Canwest's exit TV3 have increase its Irish output (but they are still under the same management and they could easily produce even more homegrown productions).

Canwest also left NewZealand, and it seems as though they have also improved from what I have read.

The problem with canwest is their complete lack of imagination and the complete and total need for money. The Asper Family are a pain in Canada's media backside. On the takeover of TV3 in New Zealand Lenord Asper is reported to have said that TV3 weren't there to make TV but to sell soap (i.e. Advertising). In Ireland they invested in the cheapest American output they could find bring them up to a 7% share of the audience by 2001, which they would have been happy with as Canwest felt that to be number one or two your losing money trying to keep an audience with extravgent TV productions. 3 is a magic number.

Original FM should be happy that they have new owners.
