Who takes more sick days

We just had a good debate at the morning tea break (yes 10am and we've already had a tea break :p) about who takes more sick days men or women.

Throw it into google and the same answer comes back, women take more sick leave. And its not just about caring for kids, noone in our office has any.

first none of the women would admit this to being true, then by the end they just claim that men exagerate illness and treat a cold like the flu and take days off for minor things.

But this surely doesnt add up. How can men take more sick days for minor things but still take less sick days over all?!

And do men take sick days for minor things? I've never seen it, Ive never seen a sick woman in work but I always see lads who are dying. Isnt there more pressure on men to soldier on??

    So what do you think
    Who takes more sick days?
And do men over react to a runny nose?

With Mondays being universal weekly sick-day, I'm surprised that Kaptain Redeye had anybody to talk to during his tea-break.

It was the subject of missing team members that sparked the debate ;)

I haven't been off sick for 19 months, and I haven't pulled a sickie for so long I can't remember the last one, def over 3 years though.

I've taken one sick day in 3 years. (I'm a bloke) and I was actually feeling better but was completely ****ed off with my job so I was naughty. I was brought up in such a way that when I was sick I was given a dispirin and pegged out the door to school (unless genuinely sick).

On the otherhand there is a lad I work with who has on a conservative guess taken more sick days this year already than I am granted in holidays. I mean, he took a half day the other day for a sore throat the poor lamb.

Anyway, I don't think gender really matters. It's more of an outlook/upbringing sort of thing.

Female boss: You're just hungover. Get the fvck in here or you're fired.

Nice comeback. Nothing worse than a Yore Ma joke with absolutely no effort put in.

Something like "Yore ma takes more sick days judging by the warts on me mickey" would have been a little better. Make the effort people.

Apparently from reading another thread, men have to stick a watermelon up their penis before we're allowed to whinge about stuff like this. Equality my arse.

I have this disease called the burden of humanity.
It clamps and wrings blood out of my intimate organs once a month, so that life as we know it may continue.
    Got a problem with that?

Male Boss: I hear ye. Hope you had a good night. High Five!

Female Employee: I don't think I can make it in today, feeling under the weather.

Female boss: Oh that's fine sure we will see you tommorrow.
To another employee: That bitch is pissing me off, I don't believe she is sick, she is so fired. And her arse is getting bigger.

Pighead clamps and wrings fluid out of his intimate organ so that his life as he knows it may continue. You don't see him whingeing like a moaning minnie. And he does it a lot more than once a month too.

Maybe you enjoy your fluid wringing a lot more so than we do though. The only thing I enjoy about my monthlies is the part where I get to complain about them. And that it means I'm not pregnant, again. Thanks for letting me know every month, body. It would be easier if you just let me wee on a stick instead.

    True that.

Still are we in any position to complain, given that we are posting on AH in the middle of the day?

I think this whole idea of the "manflu" is just down to the fact that we don't complain as much about when we have the sniffles and our mascara is running because our eyes are all watery, as such individual times where we are genuinely sick and complain are far easier to remember.
7 years since my last sick day and counting.

Also if women are taking sick days due to periods then why is there such uproar when this point is raised regarding female leaders/presidents and such topics? Either it genuinely is so bad as to render a person unsuitable for the job for a day or two a month or you're all just skiving off and using it as an excuse.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,239 ✭✭✭✭WindSock

I have never known a woman to use the period excuse willy-nilly to get out of work. I do however know of some women who get it it really really bad that they can't move for a day or two. In those circumstances it is acceptable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,766 ✭✭✭Reku

Then why was it brought up in this thread as an excuse?
Ok, it was originally brought up by a lad, but has since been referenced by at least 2 ladies.

Men and women do it, depends on the person.

I used to work with a girl who never missed a day, even came in while sick. On the other hand there was another girl in there who missed about 3-4 days each month, she was fired.

must say its women in my workplace but then mostly women work there. Some people see sick days as almost holidays- must use them !! Awful attitude to have. I have not taken a sick day in years.
