    How do...

So heres the dilema. THinking of goin back to play rubgy after a good 3 year break. I used to play prop but im totally fed up with it and want to play a different position. I would be most familiar with a forward position so will prob stay in the pack. Im about 5'9 and 14 st but very agile. Was thinking of giving flanker a try but il have to get alot fitter. Someone also mentioned No.8 but i was wondering would height be a factor here??? Any ideas anyone?

Second Row would be an option . Just dont Jump in the lineout, just lift like you would have as a prop. Im personally a Second Row/Flanker, more Second Row, but its good fun and you still give everything you can in the scrum :)

If you can get your overall stamina up and have a taste for work load you could go in at 7 try make the most tackles on the team and link with any backs who have broken through the line and your set.

What level are you looking to play at ? If you go for J5 type you could probably play fullback if you can sprint 200 meters in under 12 minutes.

i was kinda hoping to move up to a J3 level. Fed up of playing dead end rugby not that J3 is semi professional or anything! just sick of having 40 year old men falling on top of you with all 20 stone of thier being!

at j3 level you would probably be able to play blind side,

even at J3 you would be way to short for second row,

Speed is the biggest factor for the back 3, when I moved from prop to No 8. I had to really bust myself to get to every 2nd ruck.

but it's certainly not as tiring as being in the front row.

YEh blind side was my original consideration to be honest, reaching the rooks wouldnt be too much of a chore, i used to try and reach as many as i could as a prop, I was always first in so that shouldnt be too much of a problem. Would height be a factory for no.8 do you think?

Make sure you declare yourself as not a prop, otherwise you'll be thrown in there for contested scrums. Based on what you say, I'd go for flanker.

Depending on the size of the pack your playing with I would say you might be a liitle small for No 8.
Certainly most of the players on our thirds would be over 6ft apart from hooker and blind side.

I'm 6" 2 and 16 stone and certainly wouldn't be the biggest No 8. out there

If your fast, try the wing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,049 ✭✭✭thehamo

id rather stay in the pack to be honest, its what i know best. and besides, every new player that comes down to a team always seems to play on the wing!

Nothing wrong with playing on the wing.

Flanker is a great position if you could get it!
You get the best of both worlds, backs and forwards.
Which side flanker? Which ever you feel more comfortable in.

I know you don't like backs but you could try full back if you have any tackling ability...:D

Yeh think im gonna go with blind side flanker. Just need to get moving with the fitness and a little bit of speed training!!!!

Judging by the size of you I'd be looking at open side if I were you. Maybe get a bit of training at centre too if you're at a low enough level (starting back) to become a better 7. Depends on the team of course but I suppose a traditional rugby approach is to have a bigger 6 (a mix of a 2nd row and an 8) and a smaller quicker groundhog of a 7. That said your team might decide to have two even enough flankers.

Best thing is to get back to training and see what you're good at. Hooker might also be an option but obviously its a very specialised position- could be worth a crack.

I play 6 (never 7) and when needed can fill in 2nd row or even 8. Our 7 who is great at what he does wouldn't be able to do either- he's either 7 or very occasionally playing in the backs.

Slight hijack here folks. Never played rugby before in my life but wouldn't mind starting now. I'm 5'9 and weigh around 11st. Don't have too much pace though so that may rule out the wings. Any reccomendations on a position?

I wouldn't necessarily say the wing is ruled out.
Blinding pace helps to be a winger but it isn't the be all and end all of wing play. The most important parts of being a winger are positioning, positional awareness and an ability to keep an eye on the defensive line and call out the numbers to prevent overlaps.
Certainly speed is a help but at lower levels there are very few out and out speedsters. Give it a shot and the team will find a position for you soon enough.

Oh and remember to enjoy yourself.

Also consider that at the lower levels back line beginners are often trialed on the wings and work their way in over time.

i think ur a bit small for number 8 because are normally the biggest and strongest players on the field also u have to be a great ball carrier.

flanker wud probably be the best poisition in the pack for u if ur prepared to work hard at tackiling, rucking, pick and goes, and sprinting and stamina basically u have to be gud at everything apart from kicking and passing

ur agility will help u alot but u will have to work on ur fitness.

technique is more usefull than brute strenght in this position

    hope this helped
