Post-run recovery drinks

I did a two hour run yesterday as part of training for the Dublin marathon. Found it bloody hard, toughest run I've done yet.

I happened upon Glanbias' Provon Revive website last week and got a free sample mailed out. Used it after the run yesterday, and I don't know if I'm confident enough to say whether or not it was the cause but I've recovered a lot better than I'd expected. I suppose it's reasonable to assume that taking a proper recovery drink immediately after helped at least a bit.

Anyway, it got me thinking about whether or not to buy more for subsequent long runs but doing some searches on it, I've not seen it recommended anywhere. It did get some bad comments over on the fitness forum, though I don't know if that's more from a lifting point of view.

Does anyone else use any specific recovery drinks or are they even worthwhile (ie, could it be partly a mental thing)? Otherwise what do people do after a long run?

what distance were your previous long runs? What did you previously take after them? Had you had enough sleep/rest before the "tough" run.

There is nothing wrong with provon revive. The problem the fitness people had is that it doesn't contain enough protein (17.8g) but the Carb: protein ratio is 3:1 and it has a significant whack of BCAA which are good for endurance athlete's. We had a lot of the single sachets at some at one stage and I used them because they were there. I tended to use them out on the bike during training rather than after. I still like "real" food after training whenever it is practical.

Saturdays' run was 13.5 miles, up on 11.5 miles, which I didn't find nearly as tough while doing it. In both cases I had meals (chicken and veg) prepared and waiting. I had the Provon when I got in and had the meal when I got showered and changed. I probably wasn't as rested as I could've been.

I use Provon Revive, but only after a very long run (18+ miles). I think it helps but it's no substitute for eating and hydrating properly.

Hard to say how good it actually is. In preperation for a Spring marathon the only sports drinks or supplements I took, were Lucozade sport or Club Energise Sport. Found it tough getting out the day after a long run for a recovery jog. Training for an autumn marathon now and I don't know if it's because I'm fitter and stronger, or because I'm taking Provon Revive, but I'm not suffering the next day like I used to.

It's no miracle cure though, the legs are still a bit stiff after yesterday's 20 miler.

Link for Glanbia Provon Revive for those who want to try it is http://www.provonrevive.ie/register.aspx

My own tuppence worth is that getting the nutrition into you is only one part of recovery. I usually have a cold bath or a cold shower on the legs and for me this is what helps me more than anything.

Real food is the way to go, I sometimes take a protein shake when I'm feelin tired after a long run then followed by a good meal(plenty of cards), does the job. On another note, I just bought a pair of recovery tights made by a company called SKINS, I find they work a treat after a long run, legs feel brand new next day got them in runways.ie for 90euro.

Just received an e-mail from Glanbia, to say that you can buy two boxes (20 sachets each) + free shaker, for 60 euro (normally 90 euro).

Just use the discount code 'Hurling' when placing the order.

Stuff tastes really vile though. ;)
