there's as much bad metal as there is bad indie, some metal is pretty good, slayer come to mind, drone bands like sunn o))) and boris are great, death metal and black metal are 99.9% of the time crap (exceptions for bands like opeth and at the gates) there are also good bands that make music with metal in mind such as porcupine tree, red sparrows and then you have yer 'post metal' stuff like isis which is awesome...but the bands ive named there are all over the place musically, from sunn o))) to porcupine tree is a big leap, music is music, just because its called metal doesnt mean you should boycott it, thats for scenesters not music fans

I find it's mostly juvenile nonsense that appeals largely to angry and isolated teenagers. But that's just me.

I do find the band names hilariously idiotic though. Y'know, the childish 'oomph' names like WINTERSWORD or BLOOD DEATH. I don't know how even metallers can take any of that seriously... I'd like to believe they don't but I'm yet to have that confirmed.

I also kind of take issue with the rape of Celtic culture that's being perpetrated by metal acts in recent years.

Just listen to whatever you like, and let your friend listen to whatever he likes. Music appeals to different people in different ways, it strikes a chord with you, evokes all kinds of emotions, and won't always strike someone in the same way. Tastes can be extremely personal.

Yes, I do find it very small minded for someone to only listen to one kind of music, but it really doesn't matter to me, it's that person's taste of music and if they're missing out on something then so be it. But maybe what they listen to is all that appeals to them, and if that's the case, who are we to judge?

To specifically answer your question, yes metal is awesome and yes it does suck. Depends on the bands, there's absolutely no end of terrible metal bands, just like there's so many fantastic ones. It's all subjective.
