M50 fixed speed cameras

    Hi.
Can anyone tell me what Dublin speed cameras are actually in operation at the moment.
Specifically the M50 and N/M7 ones.

I notice that a lot of traffic on the M50 seems to ignore the ridiculous 60kph speed limits especially.
Can i infer from this that no M50 cameras are operational?

I drive reasonably but i'm worried that i may have (very slightly) exceeded the limit on a number of occasions (especially the 60kph).

Only recently i've seen their exact locations on my Tomtom- but i can't actually see some of them on the road at all.
I presume the Tomtom ones are the fixed ones?
And are these things roadside boxes or overhead cameras?
And WHICH ONES ARE ACTUALLY WORKING?.
    Cheers.

As far as I can see, they're all offline, out of order or dismantled

The one at the Tallaght on-ramp on the M50 northbound is gone, the N4 one opposite the Spa hotel is offline as far as I can tell, (besides, the calibration lines aren't visible on the road), the one before the airport exit northbound on the M50 is useless too afaik, I was driving there a few weeks back and forgot the 60 kph rule and was worried about it, but the camera box is obscured by overgrowth anyway, so here's hoping. :)

The one near the approach to the M1 interchange is not offline/out of order.
It just hasn't been reduced to 60km/h. Saw it flash recently at a car flying along (>130km/h). I don't think the flash zone is obscured though but I stand to be corrected. The road markings are pretty much gone though so the speeder would more than likely have gotten away with it!

If you've got your eyes peeled, you can't miss them. When you have an hour free, re-drive the M50 with the TomTom and keep an eye out on the left, AFAIK there's only 2 or 3 cameras on the M50, but from your post I seem to understand that there's more than that indicated by your satnav.

Don't infer anything when it comes to penalty points, don't follow other drivers.

Things aren't as bad as your TomTom says, but don't presume they're not working just because everyone else does.

Edit: others beat me to it (including one who's vastly more qualified to answer that question than I...). I stand by the sentiment of my answer though :p

Maybe it was just the way it looked in my rearview mirror, ah well.

[nervous voice]You're sure its still at 120 kph?[/nervous voice]

    :pac:

Yep, The radar part is still turned on on the M1/M50 camera anyway, my V1 gets a bit chattery at the Ballymun slip road, but as said before its lens is covered by overgrowth. I've not seen it flash and ppl i've seen are well over the limit incl myself :D

The N4 SPA Hotel camera is switched off months now.

The camera at the end of the toll had been off for a while prior to its removal.

M1 camera after Junction 12 heading back towards dublin is live radar wise i seen a couple of cars tear past it with no flash.

Yeah i just figured that if they were operational half the country would have racked up 12 points by now.
If they are actually operational, it's very hard not to get a "shooting fish in a barrel" feeling.

And none of the M50 is 120kph either, is it (what's the M bit for ) - so it's like they're saying "here's a road with sections fit for 120kph, let's see if you can resist going over 100kph though and avoid points."

Personally I've more of an issue with paying €2 each time to drive on what has obviously become a badly arranged and piss-poor effort at a building site-come-third world style dirt track!

Back on topic, be wary of the cameras irrespective of what you hear, it can be useful to watch the other drivers ahead of you, particularly if they drop anchor just after passing it, they may have been flashed. If you're on your own, drop down to the speed limit just to be on the safe side imo!

    !

Your not charged €2 to drive on a building site. Theres no building going on on the bridge. Thats all the toll is for.

Yeah i've seen what look like overhead cameras (like CCTV cameras) on flyovers and boxes on the side of the road (at the places indicated by the GPS), but in other places i've seen nothing at all.
Don't infer anything when it comes to penalty points, don't follow other drivers.

    No of course not.
It's just in the 60kph zones especially , if practically everyone else is doing 70kph (hell 80kph even) perfectly safely, why be the only one on the road sticking to the 60.
Things aren't as bad as your TomTom says, but don't presume they're not working just because everyone else does.
    Fair enough

That's much better then, isn't it?

(Technically, you are indeed correct sir!)

    Yeah crazy.

You say if you're on your own?
Are you safer in convoy :)
Like i'm guessing there's no way multiple detections in front of you would prevent your detection.
Again not condoning unreasonable driving (just don't want to be done for 65-70 in a ridiculous 60kph zone).

    .

Yes technically the person in the lane beside you IF going faster and is in front of you when it flashes.. (hence the use of the lines) should get the fine.

Also anyone know anything about the N/M7 ones.
Are they like poles at the side of the road.
    And are they working?

in terms of proactive fine avoidance, that's probably the best bit of advice here!

There's no fixed cameras on the M7 AFAIK are you sure its not flagging a 'mobile' camera.

Yeah the speed traps on the device are actually listed as "mobile speed traps".
    So yeah i guess.
Even though i think my TT probably lists all speed traps (even fixed) as mobile speed traps.
Edit: I'll trust Google Maps. :)

Have you physically seen the Grey GATSO box on this road???

Like this one on the old airport road some kind person added a cone to (prime suspect: alan partridge :D)

    gatsoll3.jpg

What database are you using IrishSpeedtraps? PocketGPSWorlds?? I reckon your being alerted to common spots the garda are located at.

TBH it was dark the last night i was driving down the M7 so i'm not sure.
(I've only started to get antsy about these cameras in the last couple of days so never paid too much attention before this
I'll look the next time though.
    I don't think so though.

    Ha.
Interesting to see how easily defeated they are.

Can't remember where i got them now tbh.
PocketGPSWorld database costs something (and they're mostly UK) , aren't they- so not those IIRC.
I downloaded them free from a Boards link IIRC- irishspeedtraps are free aren't they so probably those are the ones.
I'm using them with TT navigator on my phone (Teleatlas v6.75 maps).

I seem to have a lot (but not all) of the co-ordinates posted above.

Actually your right the PGPSW is only UK it used to have Irish co-ords

OK so i'm guessing there mobile traps being flagged TBH that would do my head as most major roads have had a garda speedtrap on it at one stage or another.

There's easier ways of defeated their traps ;) ...apart from not speeding :D

    Traffic monitoring cameras!

There are indeed no fixed speed cameras along the N7 at all. The original Gatso cameras were installed in counties Louth, Meath and Dublin only. Of the 22 or so, there were only 3 with film IIRC (but they all flashed).

Yeah i seem to remember the 3 figure from before alright- i suppose i was wondering here if things had changed since then.
    Obviously not

Some of them are dummy box's that just fake flash (only once instead of twice AFAIK) but as kbannon said only 3 use the film at anyone time.
