    Hey

I've applied to do enegry engineering in UCC in September.

Will studying engineering take up alot of my time? Will I still be able to get a job and go out a few times a week?

My friends that i'm living with are doing arts so they're going to have a huge amount of freedom!

    Thanks

Most engineering courses are quite time-consuming. You should have some spare time in first year though. Not quite as much as someone whoses doing arts though!

Your going to develop issues with your arts friends. For sure.

its easy to strike a balance between study and social life.

The only think I wasnt able to do was work part time.

I did on average 30 hours a week for 4 years. A couple of hours study most days. Its a piece of piss.

Some people go to the extremes. Either all work and no play or all play and no work. You have to strike a balance

you will be fine dude, just get the balance right. remember in first year all you need is 40% to pass and it dosnt go towards your final degree grade. dont go in studying like mad, you dont want to peak too early.

you will not have nearly the free time that they will. but you will have free time.

and you should actually get a job at the end of it too.

Aiming for 40% is not the best of ideas

absolutely, but i dont think you need to aim for 70%+ either.

Much better than aiming for 40%

As I said its all about striking a balance.

Exactly! Speak to some one before you make a decision like this so quickly

    What were you offered?

I was offered applied psychology which I would like to do but I really wanted energy engineering!

Not a chance of it coming down in round 2

What were offered in the IT?

    Civil in CIT

I don't want to go to an IT. Already have my house near UCC and looking forward to UCC's facilities, clubs etc...

I was getting prepared for life as an engineer and now going down a complete different path

There's always a chance. Someone mightn't do it and you're at the next tier (though it might go to random selection).

Could do a course and change? I know some one who swapped UCD engineering for Trinity.

Its never a done deal there are ways and means of getting what you want

I would think hard and long about it before you accept applied psychology, afaik it is a long road to carve a career path out of it.

You could do that indeed. If you're thinking of doing this the best thing to do is to contact the college you're looking to go to early in their term (so September for most college, October for Trinity).

You will have to have the points for the relevant college, and there will have to be a place available for you there.
