    Hi
My boyfriend bought a wii a while ago and has bought a few games here. Im going to the US shortly and was thinking of stocking up on some games for him for christmas. My brother warned me against buying games in the states saying they wont work on a wii bought in Europe. he said its the same with the psp etc but i was sure a friend of mine bought ds games for her daughter in Boston last year.

Can anybody enlighten me and let me know if the games would work or not? dont want to waste cash on games that would be useless to him.

US Wii games won't work on EU consoles unfortunately. They're what's called "Region Locked" (like the regions on DVDs).

DS games are different however. I don't think Nintendo have ever locked a handheld. Probably something to do with people travelling with them.

As for PSPs, I think the games are region free, but the UMD moved are locked.

Is he comfortable with homebrew? It's possible to make the wii region free but out of the box his Wii will not play US games.

The DS, GBA, etc., PS3 and PSP play games from any region (movies on Sonys consoles are different).

Even with the region free homebrew program there are compatibility problems with loads of games. Smash Bros. Brawl for instance won't work yet.

That's not the only option, assuming the Wii has been updated there's the IOS downgrader + freeloader, or an app called Starfall that makes the Wii region free. The Wii might also need to be downgraded for this, but it comes with a certain amount of risk.

There's also a Wii region changer but Starfall is better. But if he hasn't used homebrew before then I wouldn't recommend it yet.

Thanks a mil for all your advice!

looks like he's going to have to do without the games. Unless anyone can recommend a website where i could order the games cheaper. Have looked on play.com but they arent much cheaper and i dont really trust ebay
