Have noticed alot of people putting "x miles on the clock" in their adverts, is this just a handy way of them selling a clocked car in that they are not actually saying there's x miles on the car instead?

I think you're reading too much into it :)

It doesn't matter what the advert says. When buying a car one should always get it properly and professionally checked over. If it has a UK heritage then get a HPI check done also.
Service history and NCT certs will also help (but not always) against clocking.

Micmclo's right, it's a turn of phrase, nothing more.

If the ad says 'x miles off the clock', then it's time to worry.
