If you want to be a mechanic then you have to get an apprenticeship.

Check fas.ie and your local newspapers for current jobs going. If there are any garages near you then it won't do any harm to go in and ask if they're looking for people. Have a CV typed up just in case.

I'm not completely sure of how it works once you get a job, i think the employer has to register you with fas or something to make it all official. Then you'll spend your first phase on the job, learning the basics, after about a year you'll have to go to college for some 'formal' training, this will last a couple of months or so, then back on the job then back to college, and so on.

It will take 4 years to become qualified. But it may take time and patience to find someone who is hiring.

A friend of mine used to be a mechanic, but left a few years ago when cars became computerised.

He used to have to investigate failures and fix them (like on Wheeler Dealer and all those shows on Discovery) but that all changed with computers... Now mechanics plug a laptop into the engine and it tells you what's wrong.

He said it is very unsatisfying!

So I reckon before you invest 4 years of your life, ask can you work for free for a while (or even just watch) at your local mechanic.

    thanks for the advise
i like learning about cars so i might take it up,
but the thing is i dont really know that much about cars,
i dont think anyone would hire sum1 like me that wudnt know too much about them, i dunno if its worth their while
could fas set me up with an apprenticeship? cause i wouldnt know where to start trying to find one

No, they won't.. It's like any other job, you have to find it yourself.

I wouldn't worry about not knowing anything, that's the whole point of an apprenticeship.

Seriously, just keep an eye in the papers, fas.ie, nixers.ie and call around to any garages in your area, ask if they're looking for any 1st year apprentices.

    From looking at this:

It seems most of the mechanic jobs are as truck mechanics or HGV mechanics. Worth keeping in mind!
