Entrance scholarships?

Hey guys. I just got my leaving cert results and I'll be going to Trinity this October. I got 555 and i heard I can get an entrance scholarship since i got over 545. Do I just need over 545 to get one or are there more criteria for getting one? Also do I have to apply for it or do I just wait till the start of term to get it?

And also, I want to apply for a sports scholarship in the boat club. I won a champs pot in the Junior18 XIII Irish National Championships in 2007 with Commercial RC. Do you think that's enough to secure a scholarship? And if i get one does that mean there'll be loads of pressure on me to train constantly or is it not that big a deal? cos i dont want to be training every single day just cos i got a scholarship. thanks to any rowers out there that can help!

You automatically get it if you get over 540, ie 545 or higher. you dont have to apply for it, you get a letter from the college with the 'scholarship', and to attend a gathering where you get free horrible wine and your photo taken with the vice-dean and it's sent to you also.

Don't hold your breath though, the so-called scholarship is 2 X €127 book vouchers, one in 1st yr, and one in 2nd yr.

Regarding the second part of your post, I dont know how you apply for it but I'd say you'd have to apply. It's a considerable amount of money as well and you definitely shouldn't miss out on it. Also, if you get it, there may be some le-way if you didn't score well enough with CAO points. I know a guy who got 5 points less than the minimum points requirement and got a basketball scholarship and got offered the place on first round

The entrance 'scholarship' that requires 545 points, is the Entrance Exhibition Award. Just requires 545 or over. You get €254 in book tokens over two years.
You'll get €127 in October, along with a ceremony and €127 in October of Second Year.

Congrats on the points by the way ;)

2 X €127 book vouchers? Why do they give so little?

Because the Leaving Cert is not the be-all and end-all and the majority of TCD students get over 500 points. The real scholarships are saved for special exams in second year. The benefits of those kick ass.

Ah, the schols exam, everyone should try and aim to pass them, when I go into 2nd year anytime I'm not working on the actual course content or in work will be spent trying to do past schols papers

passing them is not the hard part. that little gap between 69 and 70 is the biggest one percent you will ever experience.

Also past papers are only good if the paper's structure remains the same.

Wel, at the very least it would mean I'm immersed in computer science, studying and putting a lot of effort into it, can hardly hurt my education.

You're probably better off knowing your courses inside out than focusing solely on past papers.

Try and retain your love for the subject.

Excellent advice, the idea of doing the schols for me is to do as much work related to the field as I can, get experience and hopefully gain a broader understanding from it- self-directed study and all that, having the schol exam and it's rewards is just an incentive.

This is getting very OT, I'll shut up now :D

Scholarship exams, you can do them in SF year(think you can also do it any year) around Easter. Lots of benefits to them, like:

Exemptions: If you get a 2.1 or higher (60% or higher) overall you will be recommended for exemption from your Senior Freshman examinations. You must still pass coursework only subjects and broad curriculum subjects.
Getting Schol: To be recommended for a foundation scholarship you must get an overall first class honour (70% or higher) overall in the foundation scholarship examinations.

Entitlements: If you become a foundation scholar you're entitled to the following for five years:
• Free Commons (An evening meal served in the College Dining Hall).
• Free rooms for nine months of the year.
• A salary of not less that 253.95 Euros per year!
• Free fees** (remember post-grad). (** Note that non-EU students who are awarded a scholarship will have their fees reduced by an amount corresponding to the fee for EU-students)
But they're more difficult than end of year exams, or so I hear. And I think there's only a limited number of places, 70? But the exemptions are pretty cool, at least.

There are a limited number of foundation scholarships, but there are also non-foundation scholarships which are unlimited and are almost the same in everything but name. Foundation Scholarships are limited to 70 in total, so only those whose tenure has run out are replaced each year, meaning there is between 10 and 20 foundation scholarships given each year. The number of total scholarships is closer to 70 or 80 each year.

They are more difficult then the end of year exams, but well worth doing.

Depends on the subject. For the most part, I really don't think the TP schols was any harder then the subsequent summer exams (It was possibly marked slightly harder though).

Sweet, I get an entrance scholarship.

Where are the book vouchers for?

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,881 ✭✭✭Kurtosis

Either Waterstones, Hodges Figgis or Easons (not sure about Easons actually now that the one on Nassau Street is gone). You get a form from college that you then present in one of the above places when buying something, and they'll give you the balance left from the 127 in their own vouchers. Word to the wise, once you get Waterstones or Hodges Figgis vouchers, you can use them in HMV.

well done on the exhibition baza... I'll see you at the ceremony. what'd you get in the leaving?

anyone know anything about the rowing scholarships??? or any sports scholarships??? It says i need two references... Do these have to be long or from my coaches? cos my coach wants me to continue rowing for his club, so i doubt he'd be happy if i asked for a reference to get a trinity scholarship. Anyone know what kinda references i need?
thnx

EDIT: actually Baza210, i'll see you in Engineering. :D
