Missed application deadline

I've just received a letter from a job I applied for a month ago stating that they could not consider my application as I had missed the deadline.

The deadline for this job was Friday 18th july. I had only found out about the job a few days before the deadline and my plan was to get the application sent by registered post on wednesday. Owing to some various computer problems I didn't get a hard copy in my hands till wednesday night. I went into work on thursday morning and gave the application to one of the guys in the post-room to send by swiftpost. Now, assuming that the post-room guy did what I asked him to do, that should have reached them the next day (Within Cork City).

Whatever happened they must only have received it on monday. This is a reasonably large public sector body. Is there any point in me ringing their HR department on monday and asking them to reconsider? I'd imagine that I'm facing an uphill battle given that interview schedules have probably already been drawn up. If anyone can offer any advice or share similar experiences it would be appreciated.

(And before anyone suggests strangling the post-room guy he's already left, very lucky for him)

I wouldn't bother. The problem isn't the CV screening or the interview schedule, it's that public sector recruitment policies are being applied. They aren't supposed to accept late application. As the entire process is subject to appeal and all information, scorings, notes, etc are technically available for challenge they could end up with a lot of hassle if they hire someone in breach of the rules.

Well its not civil service as such. Its a statutory body (Citizens information board to be exact) so would they be subject to the same policies?

All Civil Service and Public Service jobs would be subject to rules like that. It'll definitely be in one of the two groupings. As they're listing jobs in the grades HEO and EO they should be Civil Service.
