Hi guys, just curious as to what you think about the possibility of points rising/falling this year? I got 565 in my Leaving and hoping to do a course that was 525 last year. Should I be okay?.. Have heard some stories of points jumping by more in the past.

Maybe, maybe not. I don't mean to be harsh but no-one here will be able to give you a suitable answer. The only answer you will get that will give you any indication of it will be on the CAO's website at 6am on Monday.

It depends on the course: the supply of places and the demand from students.

Ok first things first. You have post leaving cert nerves. take a deep breath and get out of the house. Stop thinking about the exams that could have been different/Monday and the CAO offers.

As for a jump in the points for your course. There is abaolutely no way of knowing. IIRC the infamous points jump was for Maths. It went up about 100 points one year. Maths had been about 400. However this is quite unusual. The points for courses are set the students who apply for them. Not by the CAO. If the exact number of people applied for Medicine as places the entry for the course would be the person with the lowest points. Say 300. However more (many more) people apply for medicine than there are places and so the people with 600 get offered, then 590, then 585 etc. Will your course jump? Hopefully not. 565 is a huge amount of points. A 40 point jump at that level of points is quite unrealistic. Every 5 points over 500 gets harder and harder to get. You will probably be fine. Arts courses in Trinity have dropped by 5-10 points over the last 3 years. Law the year ebfore I came to Trinity was 575, the year I got in it dropped to 525. So you just don't know what the people who have also applied for your course are going to get.

You've done really well. Chill out. Stress on Monday if necessary. Think of the people who already know they haven't gotten their course. 5-10 points out and knowing they haven't a hope.

Think about the amount of places available in the course as well, the higher that number is the less the amount of points necessary will vary. I'd say at that high end of the scale, you're pretty safe as well, because there are probably only about 800 people in the country who did better than you in the 2008 leaving cert, so for your course to go to 570, you'd need to have the amount of places available in your course be filled out of that 800.

    In summary, you'll be graaaaaaand

    Yes, it's quite possible.

If you got 565 points on your Leaving Certificate you have nothing to worry about cause you can get any course you want besides Medicine no matter if the points go up or down.
Have things changed, or are you a crazy person?

You're so authoritative Antithetic. I really dig that.

    ...can't it be both?

OP: It'd be unusual to get a 40-point jump at your level. Not impossible, but unusual. Bear in mind the magic of re-checks and later-round offers and just don't panic until next Wednesday.

No. Either a new rule that you can pick whatever course you want if you got 565 or yes, it does matter if the points go up or down.

OP: I wouldn't worry about it. Regardless, there's nothing you can do now so you just have to sit tight and bear it.

You misunderstand me. What I meant was the the existence (or lack thereof) of a new 565-point rule is in no way related to the insanity (or lack thereof) of Jimdw (though he seems perfectly sane from other posts, suggesting a lack of insanity). Thus, your "or" placed an unnecessary restriction on two outcomes that weren't mutually exclusive, suggesting that you, in fact, are the crazy person.

I love these lazy Saturdays :D

I disagree. The absence of such a new rule mean Jimdw was offering foolish advice to a LCer. That's crazy talk. Not in the certified insanity way, but in the "oh no you din'nt!" way.

Ah, but what of the omitted variables? How can we know if Jimdw was deliberately offering misinformation or was simply mistaken? The latter could hardly be defined as "crazy" in any sense, even the "Oh no you di'n't *finger snap*" way. You're assuming correllation based on assumptions, and that way lies madness and poor hypotheses.

(I also love these lazy Sundays)

The Flananator's post deleted because it was inflammatory and, well, odd.

Anyways, this thread has probably done all it can do.
