I was looking at one of these in Peats today where they are retailing for €429.

They lad in the shop said they were pretty much rubbish. That the processor was too slow and they don’t have enough memory.

But I just want to get one as a secondary PC to surf the net, use MS Word Excel and to watch DivX movies when travelling (I’ll story these on my main PC).

Would the 901 be up to this job?

Wow what a salesman! As is sadly the case with so many staff in retail outlets(actually Peats is normally better than most places) he doesnt have a clue what hes talking about ....It would be ideal for your proposed usage.By the way you should be able to pick it up for under 400 euro if you look elsewhere (Elara?).

He didn't by any chance try to sell you something more expensive directly afterwards did he? :) You'll get one for about €400 online. 901 is fine for regular use. Sure you won't be playing games on it, but that's not what it is. Its an ultra portable machine that's an ideal companion to a PC.

Well i can say that they are brilliant machines. there is both a XP version and a Linux 901 in the house and both are fantastic for regular use as Stephen said . Out of curiosity which peats was it?

Not sure he should reveal that for the sake of the guy's job!

Although I mighty add that I asked in Peats about the EEE a month or so ago and the sales guy tried to convince me that EEEs were a oddball load of rubbish also and that hundreds of them have been returned faulty here in Ireland. For an alternative view the owner of a large Irish supplier said that 1 out of 150 had been retuened to him and that was ok upon inspection ...While there are some undoubtedly knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff members there I guess it has its 'weak links' like every where else ...

If there was serious reliability problems with the eeepc then that massive eeepc thread (I'm pretty sure it's the biggest thread on this forum) would be twice the size it is now and filled with complaints.

If you do a quick search one of these with 2gb of ram installed can run vista ultimate very well!
The sad part of this story is it ran better than my pc on a 3ghz and 1.5gb of ram with vista home basic :(

Was that an Intel Core2Duo 3GHz?
Is Vista Ultimate optimised to run at low ram/cpu levels.Ive got Vista Home Premium will it work as well?

    I imagine it was a pentium 4 @ 3Ghz.

He did start getting excited about the screen quality on some €2000 Sony Vaio alright. Wasn't really the best listener tbh ;-)

Can extra RAM be installed into the 901?

Yes you can put a single 2Gb ram chip into the machine. Shop4memory do them.

    Part Number: MIOPE1B16
    Manufacturer: Adata

Cheap memory's great, but I find that my 901 is running just fine on 1GB. I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 on it.

Peats still don't have the 901 in stock. I had a look round a few more shops in town. None of them had it either but one of them recommended the Acer Aspire One as an alternative. He said there is a Windows XP version coming out in the next two weeks that is superior to the Eee PC 901.

    Any thoughts?
