I am thinking about going to the Vegas for a weeks holiday - problem is i have a criminal record for a misdemeanor (possession of a tiny bit of hash) - Q is will this cause a problem or should it be straight-forward getting in

I think you may have to apply for a visa, but you should check the rules on the US Gov website. I've included what looks like the most relevant link.

I reckon you are ineligible for the Visa Waiver program and may have to seek a visa from the embassy.
The first question on document I-94W for those visiting the U.S. on the Visa Waiver Program asks:

Have you ever been arrested or convicted for an offense or crime involving moral turpitude or a violation related to a controlled substance; or been arrested or convicted for two or more offenses for which the aggregate sentence to confinement was five years or more; or been controlled substance trafficker; or are you seeking entry to engage in criminal or immoral activities?

That includes being caught or arrested for possession of hash.

Thanks for the replies lads - the reason i need to know is i might be going work-related and the last thing i need is for my employers to know - looks like i will have to get a Visa - i presume this is straight-forward enough - the trip is in Oct - should i contact the USA Embassy ? and i presume that i should not lie on the form - that they check these things

Yes you will have to get onto the US embassy as a drugs conviction
will exclude you from the Visa waiver program but not necessarily
from visting the USA. Worst case is they'll call you in for an interview
before the trip to determine whether you're the next Pablo Escobar or if
the previous conviction was a once-off in your youth.

Contact the US embassy as soon as possible.

Do not hope to walk through immigration on the Visa Waiver program
an not get caught, even moreso if it's a work trip.
