Windows XP refusing to boot following Explorer crash

Yesterday i got an error message to say that explorer had crashed yadda yadda ya. normally the taskbar etc just disappear and reappear a few seconds later. this time it didn't and the computer froze, so i had to reset.

on restart i got the usual "windows failed to close down properly" asking did i want to start in safe mode, last known good configuration or start windows normally. i tried to start in safe mode, however the system hung on the XP loading screen.

i tried the other options but same again.

after a while it stopped going to the windows xp loading screen, and instead a loading bar came up at the bottom of the screen and then froze.

any ideas on what i can do to fix it? is it just a case of running the repair tool on the windows xp install disc? or am i fecked altogether? im at work now and wont get a chance to try and fix it till later on tonight

cheers in advance for any help

    Roar

in the future when explorer.exe dies. press ctrl+alt+del to load the task manager > click file > Run... type in explorer.exe and it will reload normally. you can also use this method to manually kill explorer.exe if you ever need to.

sounds like hard drive is going to me. the reason explorer froze or died is likely down to corruption in the pagefile or something. If you have your xp disc, get to the command prompt and run chkdsk /r

    cheers for that, will do

only replaced the hard drive 6 months ago so i'd be fairly p!ssed off if it was that

might be, might not. but its one of the first things to be worried about when load-up fails.

if that doesnt work also try chkdsk /f or and simply chkdsk

Should be able to do a repair install .... (or maybe thats only in Server2003 ... its been a while since I installed XP).

    Anyway, look for the option.
