    Hi there,

Can anyone recommend a data recovery service in and around Dublin ?

My external hard disk has stopped working properly so I need to try and recover about 400GB of data from it.

    Thanks,
    Don

Data recovery can be easy or near impossible. Question you have to ask yourself before you start is how much is it worth to you?

All my photos, music and video footage are on it ! So yes it quite valuable to me to have it recovered.

Would there be any sturdy piece of software that can do further analysis of to why the HD is not functioning anymore ? eg. software that can detect the USB connected HD rather than XP to recognize ?

In my case XP does not detect the HD anymore while before the HD malfunctioning it did. Tried several computers and OS.

In microsoft we use on track data recorery. They are based in the uk but would highly reccomend them. 700€ for a MD's hard drive to be recovered. And then backed up onto a 250gb 2.5" external HDD. And back within 5 days.

    #Can you answer these questions?

Have you tried the hard-drive outside of its enclosure or just inside of it?

Does it spin up, (hard-drives make a audible noise as the motor starts the drive spinning on power up)?

Is there a clunking noise, or a stop-start noise?

Are you aware that depending on what is wrong with it, it can cost anywhere from few hundred, to a few thousand to recover the data if its a serious problem?

I can't recommend any data recovery experts in Ireland tbh, they lack the equipment needed to recover drives. I have used http://www.cbltech.co.uk/ in the past and found them very effective.

I think Dell use them as well.

    @ Cuddlesworth=

    1) no I haven't tried to take it out of its shell / enclosure. Could that make a difference ?

    2) Yes it does spin
    3) clunking sounds on the faulty power adaptor, now on new adaptor = no sound other than spinning

Personal Photos+video are priceless and replacing music would cost money as well so one has to decide at what cost ...

If you want to get this professionally recovered dont attempt to get any data off it yourself. You could do more damage.

    1) Yes, its possible its just the enclosure has died rather then the drive. Remove the drive, place it into a pc. If you are unsure of this, do you have a techy friend who could do it, or a IT department in your workplace?

    2) Promising

3)The power supply blew originally? If that is the case its likely that it took out the enclosure with it and a small chance the controller board on the hard-drive behind went. That is unlikely though as the drive most times will not spin up then. Would be easily checked by trying hard-drive on its own in a machine or another enclosure.

    Exactly, is it worth it?

Do you not think thats a little OTT, should basic recovery processes not be tried first before assuming that it needs to be professionally recovered? The cost of a couple of hundred should surely warrant it.

    1) I do have some IT guys here that might be able to help. Never thought about that and also never thought about taken it out of its casing.

    3) power supply never blew. Quite the opposite. It wasn't providing enough power.

Thanks for all your advice. I will let you know what the results are....

Nah i wouldnt risk it. Anytime ive spoken to the ontrack guys they say to be as carefull with it as possible and dont power it on again. But meh, if the OP wants to try it he can.
