Looks like the dollar is gaining some strength again. Any of you financial heads know why this is? July 21st it was at 1.58 and today its at 1.48, good news for Irish poker players anyway.

I'm going to Vegas in October, would it be advisable to buy some dollars for the trip now and buy the rest in October in case it gains in strength. I know this is a bit of a gamble in a way but surely you can sort of minimise your loses by doing this.

in short, no unless you are dealing in commercial volumes i.e. greater than 1 million

and the USD is uber-fcuked long-term, it's a debased currency

Just as I'm about to hit NY for my final US shopping spree the dollar goes and strengthens :(

I'm hoping for some unexpected bad news from the US pretty soon.....

don't worry olly, your dodgy pink ties will still be a bargain!

bold statement: I expect to see a rate of 2 within 3 years. It's the auld fundamentals, dontcha see

Well judging by how cheap the property is in the US and how cheap everything is in fact I think Ireland/UK/Spain have a lot of pain to go through before they get their economies in order. The euro may not strengthen much more.

On the other hand if you are right ElS I think I'll move to the Bahamas on a permanent basis. Cracking spot and only 70 miles from Florida but with no income tax.

P.S. I think I've forgotten what a tie is much less a dodgy pink one. ;)

Just when I hit a losing (in dollars) streak, the dollar strengthens. Marvellous.

    no income tax....drools

er, the holiday mood may have fried your brain but I think you'll find that the UK isn't in the Eurozone! And Ireland and Spain are, how I can put this delicately, 'peripheral basket cases' ;)

now repeat after me: Germany, Germany, Germany, Germany (where they save and export, save and export, save and export blah blah)

But the UK is a close trading partner of the eurozone and therefore a depressed UK economy should depress the eurozone somewhat. No??

You could be right in respect of ze Germans - I think an extensive fact finding mission is in order. I volunteer to go. :D Will report back by February.....

Actually the best thing to do (and a guaranteed way to save money) would be to buy dollars of some winning Irish degenerate who is coming back from Vegas before he goes and gets hammered by the banks screwing him over on the exchange rate than you can at least console yourself with the knowledge that you saved a few quid that way irrespective of how the dollar moves between now and October.

Spencer James or LL or whoever is coming back from the States might be good men to talk too.
