    Hi guys!

Just planning my next purchase and need some advice!

I have a 400d with kit lens and nifty fifty.

I am looking for a good lens to replace kit zoom but maybe with a bit more on the wideangle end of things, if necessary sacrificing some zoom at the long end.

Reason I am asking is that I will be travelling to New Orleans and plan on taking advantage of cheaper prices!

Any recommendations in region of maybe 10-40mm zooms or so? Quality and low light performance of paramount importance for me. Ive been checking a few diff lenses out but there are so many mixed reviews on the net I thought it would be good to get some genuine owners opinions!

    Thanks!

Hi thanks for replying so quickly

Although I wasnt really thinking about wideangle zoom, something more in range up to 35-40mm zoom.

Tokina 12-24mm. Can't recommend it highly enough. Fantastic lens for the price you can pick it up for off ebay.

I've got that too. Brilliant lens. But I suppose the 18-85 IS (the 40D kit lens) may be more suitable. I picked a three-month old one up on www.adverts.ie for just €260. Brilliant lens also. You could also try the sales forum on www.photographyireland.net

With a price tag of around €1,200, the 17-55mm is hardly a kit Lens.

You don't mention a budget. Kind of hard to recommend anything really...but....

I'd go for the 17-55 2.8 IS to be honest, the 17-40 L is far from great. I do like it, but it's muddy at best in the corners.

You say that low light performance is important to you, well ƒ2.8 beats ƒ4 everytime, never mind the IS.

The only caveat (and it's a big one) is that if you go to a full frame camera then you won't be using the 17-55 on it.
