I've been called to attend my apprentiship phase 6. Only problem is its about 50 miles from where I live. Travel allowance isn't great and there's no bus/train service so I'll be working up a hefty fuel bill. Does anyone know if you have to actually move to claim accommodation allowance or if you can claim it and live at home.

You can either get the travel allowance or the accommodation allowance but not both.
Currently if you are travelling 50km per day you will receive 32.60 per week. FAS only pay the cost of travelling to the training centre but not the journey home.
I do not know what the current rate is for the accommodation allowance but think it is somewhere in the region of 50 to 60 euro per week. Have a look at their website www.fas.ie

Thats all well and good, but it doesn't answer my question.

You will have to show proof of paying for accommodation, as far I know they will send the allowance directly to the landlord anyway.

FAS are really strict about the accomodation allowance. You wouldn't be able to live at home and claim it.
