    Hi,
Is it an introduction to welding course, intermediate or advanced level course?
I havnt done a course in shannon but have done some at FAS and CIT in Cork. For an introduction or learning to weld course they usually assume little or no knowledge of the theory or process so there isnt any test before the course, everyone is assumed to be at the same level .

For intermediate courses there often is a test to ensure that candidates have some knowledge of the process and theory a typical practical test would be T-fillet joint done on the flat.

For advanced level courses entry usually depends on the candidate being able to do a vertical up v-butt weld in 8mm steel with multiple runs (usually three) and at least 70% penetration of the root run visible at the back. These courses are usually aimed at competent welders wanting to get certified for welding of process pipework and pipelines.

What level is the course at and what processes are covered?

i have welded miles and miles with mig but not a whole lot with arc. do you reckon i should practice with the arc before goin down to do the test.
the course is in shannon and i presume its much the same as the galway course.it last for 18 weeks and i get paid to do it.i dont know much about the theory either so i should read a bit about it.how long did your course last for and was it good?

well, i did the basic course in fas balleyfermot, like what you are doing,, if there is any test for the course it will be with arc welding,,i just did an interview last week for the pipe welding course in waterford and that test was also in stick,,to be honest you dont really need to know any theory at all,,i knew none going in, but you learn the basics on the course,, the stuff that is important,,if you have to do a test i would start practising with the stick welder,,probably a T-Fillet joint, but the course should specify what you have to do, to get onto it,, they will be looking for a clean weld with no perosity or slag inclusion,,
