Go to the Businesss section on the Dell website and you can pick a machine with XP.

To be saying the truth, vista is alot more mature now and imo is better than XP (Even for games and the like)
Just so much quicker and fluid than XP, the only people you think its crap have 2gb ram which is why it slows down alot, i have 3.5GB and its smooth as butter.

No point to buy a new laptop with a good but aging OS.

Have to disagree Party...Vista sucks !Have installed and uninstalled it 3 times going back to XP.Just for starters a system restore takes a couple of minutes in XP,in Vista it takes the best part of ten minutes ...what gives? On both my PC and the wife's laptop Vista would not update(major security issue) no matter what method was used -thousands had the same weird glitch when Googled.Vista connects to Microsoft EVERY time you turn on your pc to 'phone home' to Bill Gates-as a result boot takes twice or more as long ...All the pretty interfaces are just going to be chopped along with stuff like UAC to try and speed up this lumbering hulk of an OS.
AND apparently it may be replaced in 2009 ,Microsoft have tacitly admitted its crap and are introducing an OS called "SEVEN" if I recall correctly ...

I know Im a couple of months late with my complaint but this vista situation is atrocious. I have spent a good while researching the spec I want, have had an eye on the dell site and found one to suit my needs, but can't get XP on it. I don't want vista, not that Ive i had any experience with it, but there has been some very bad publicity. Dell say your warranty will become invalid if you buy the machine and then install xp. What if any are the alternatives? I might ring up and moan down the phone to them.

How can you call it atrocious when you havent even touched it

That is So last year. SP1 is out and the vast majority of issues since launched have been worked out. Holding out for Windows 7? Its been made official this week, windows 7 will use the Vista Kernel. Theyre being very hum about the features but so far its vista with added multi-touch features and all that jazz.

But yes I was here on this very forum having a bit of a moan just like you back in september. By october I started waking up to the new features and noticed I hadnt seen a blue screen in over 3 months: something unheard of on my old rig :p

Overheal, you seem to be all over this windows/dell situation! Ya I might just hold my nose and jump in at the deep end. Hopefully I wont regret it. Buying a laptop certainly isnt an easy thing to do. Who said tecnology made things easier?!
