Backing up from one PC - restore to another?

    Hi all,

Slight silly question and I should know, but I have an old PC that I have never backed up, except onto CD and I am getting nervous about the HDD dying and losing my data - mainly concerned about all my family pics and MP3s.

Is it relatively easy to use an external HDD to backup from this old PC and restore to a new laptop. Also, another issue that I might have is that the PC is XP and the laptop is Vista. Would this cause issues?

Do most external HDD's come with backup and restore software? If not, is there a best recommended software for this?

Is it just files that you want to back up?

Are they both on the same network, eg; both connected to a broadband connection in your house.

If they are you can make the hard-drive on the old pc available on the network to browse through and transfer files across at your leisure.

It is files - Jpegs, .avi, .mpeg, .mp3's... that kind of thing...

What I am really concerned about is that I can back up this drive now as the PC is very old... I will probably decommission this machine soon/when it dies, and just use the laptop, but I need to make sure that I can restore all the files to the new laptop

Its pretty easy to back up the data with any external usb drive. Copy and paste really. Most of the one piece solutions come with software that can back up the data, but most of the applications just do the same as above.
