Id heard that there was a remake of a Nightmare on Elm Street planned and that annoyed me.Then I saw this.

Thornton to star in Nightmare On Elm Street remake

By WENN world entertainment news - Wednesday, August 13 11:55 amBilly Bob Thornton will star as Freddy Krueger in a new Nightmare On Elm Street movie.

The 53-year-old actor will take on the chilling role in a remake of the 1984 original.

Robert Englund, who played the part in eight films, revealed that Thornton will star in the horror films and is an "excellent choice" for the role.

He adds, "A big budget should mean the film will look a lot better than some of the old movies."

Where is it going to end.Im so annoyed I cannot say.

    FCUK YOU BILLY BOB,**** YOU

I was watching an interview with Englund at the weekend promoting the film linked below.

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0816539/

He was asked about the NOES remake (see, even abbreviated its against a remake!), and he was very excited about it. He was interested in seeing what the technology could do nowadays.

That being said, putting Thornton in it makes no sense. Sure why not leave Englund in the role, they're the same age??

To be fair, Billy Bob Thornton is a great actor, so while I'm certainly not excited about the prospects of a remake, especially considering how well the original holds up today, this little bit of news is hardly terrible.

Its going to be another CGI crapfest. As KH said, the original holds up very well nowadays so I dont see any that this isnt going to suck huge amounts of ass.

I could be wrong but when it comes to modern day remakes,I havnt been yet.

Well, I'd consider the remake of The Hills Have Eyes to be a big improvement on the original

And the Dawn of the Dead remake was deadly, imo they took the concept of the first film and upped the pace, and added it that extra bit of drama, but did it well

My disdain for the DOTD remake is well documented.IMO,an awful crap fest with a complete over reliance on CGI.
HHE remake, while not reaching the levels of sucktitude of the Dawn remake,is still pretty horrible-and not in the good sense of the word-just plain didnt like it.
Like wise with other remakes Ive seen - TCM,Ring,The Grudge etc etc.

    ALL BULLSPIT.

    IMHO of course.

I honestly think Billy Bob Thornton is an inspired choice, obviously once the story is well written.

Thornton as Freddie will add a new element to the character. Englund has gained legendary status as Freddie Krueger. But Englund's performance and the atmosphere of the franchise are things that really suited the 80's.

Thornton has the right combination of menace, intimidation and the deadpan humour to pull Kruegur off.

What a shame. First Halloween and now this. I suppose it's only a matter of time for Friday 13th. BB is a joke, why do they feel this is necessary?! And by BB i mean Ball-Bag Thornton. :(

Well didnt they kinda remake with Wes Craven's New nightmare?
That was pretty cool. Much darker movie than the NOES originals.
BBT is a good choice but I like the original dood.
    Also, REMAKE OF Rocky Horror?
Richard O' Brien doesnt want to be involved. You cant turn Kitsch into mainstream with a bigger budget and expect people not to hate it.

Remake of Rocky Horror is good timing with the dance movie craze that we have at the moment. There's a whole generation that doesn't give a hoot about the original and Richard O' Brien. Actually make that 2 generations...for one of them Richard O'Brien is the bloke of The Crystal Maze.

A remake of Nightmare on Elm street sounds great to me. scary movies these days just aren't scary enough and they need to redeem themselves after movie 3 onwards was a complete tack fest. Do people not remember when Freddie released a song in the charts? you can't ruin something that has already been ruined. Actually the more I think about it the more I think a remake will just be along the same tacky lines as most of the originals...maybe it is a bad idea after all.

The First Nightmare on Elm street is still quite a good film - allowances made of course.

    ^^^^

Totally.Even as a young fella I thought the sequels were a bit cheesey, but thats where their charm lies. The original however scared the be-jaysus out of me(I was 10)and I still really love it.

Someone mentioned new nightmare. That wasnt a remake plus much of the original cast and Craven were involved.

As far as remakes go,I havnt seen the Halloween remake and have no intention even though I love Zombies work.Remaking movies like that is sacrilege.

I was about the same age at the time and damn near s&*t myself watching it! ALso thought remakes were a bit cheesier.

Wasnt there a 3d nighmare on Elm st?
That ruled one dark and smoky Hallowe'en night.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't NOES 3 one of the better ones? The Dream warriors? This starred Heather Langenkamp from the original and it was seen as the second best of them. It also dealt with the origins of Freddie, "The son of a thousand maniacs...". I'd rate them in this order: (i) NOES 1, (ii) NOES 3, (iii) New Nightmare.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,925 ✭✭✭Otis Driftwood

You are correct Sir.3 is definitly the better of the direct sequels.

You are definitely in the minority in regards to the Dawn of The Dead remake. I, along with most other Romero/horror fans in general, loved it.

In regards to A Nightmare on Elm Street - I certainly dont think the original is untouchable. Its got some great ideas and while its a good film, I never felt it achieved its potential. A remake in the right hands could be very good indeed, especially with Billy Bob Thornton as Freddy. Hes a terrific actor.

Exactly. Plus, if they decide in this remake to actually show us the lead up to Krueger being murdered by the parents of Elm Street, I think Thornton would play the creepy, sadistic child molester down to a tee.

theyre doing one that and micheal bay of all people is behind it. be afraid man !

i'll reserve judgement on this till it comes out but i have to say the track record of these remakes is appalling.

yes we have dawn of the dead (and if memory serves the guy who did that is doing watchmen now :) ) but for every one of them we've go remakes of

when a stranger calls (ruined in the fcuking ADD! )

    The house on haunted hill

    the fog.

    the wicker man

and so on and so on. it doesnt mean its impossible but studios have been fecking money and big stars at muck for the guts of a decade . finger crossed though as NOES was one of the truly original horrors of its day

No point starting a new thread.

Heres some info from Upcoming horror movies.com

Filming is said to begin May 5th '09 in the Chicago area.
    - Freddy in this film is described as "Nosferatu meets Ed Gaines."
    - Actor Jackie Earle Haley (Little Children, Watchmen) will be playing "Freddy Krueger."
    - Originally scripted by Wesley Strick (Arachnophobia, Cape Fear, Wolf), but rewritten by Eric Heisserer.
    - It's said the film will take a more psychological approach.
    - Once again this is a "re-imagining" of the original film, with hopes of giving the story a complete "overhaul."
    - Platinum Dunes (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, Friday the 13th remake) is behind this.
    - No relation to the Nightmare on Elm St. prequel that's supposedly "in talks" right now, although, I wouldn't be surprised if the two projects blended together.

Actor Jackie Earle Haley (Little Children, Watchmen) will be playing Freddy Krueger.

Wesley Strick (Arachnophobia, Cape Fear, Wolf) is set to script this "re-imagining," with plans to release in time for the original film's 25th anniversary. The studio is aiming for a more psychological approach. Robert Englund has not been asked to reprise his role as Freddy, and considering the studio is looking to start fresh, they will likely pick another actor to dawn the glove.

Release date set for April 16 2010

Sigh. The fact the assclowns behind TCM + FT13th remakes are involved made me die a little inside.
    :(

After 'Little Children', that piece of casting is inspired.

Course its still going to be sh!t unfortunately.

I havnt seen him in anything and I think he does have the right physical look for the part but you are right,it will still suck.CGI a go go.

The fact that Jackie Earle Haley is involved makes me at least curious.
