Ubuntu 8 is always looking for updates

Every day I start up Ubuntu these days, I get the little update arrow thing in my panel and I have to download anything up to half a dozen 'fixes'? Is this just a pleasant side effect of OSS - that someone is constantly finding issues and releasing fixes? Is there any way of getting Ubuntu to do this automatically while I'm out at work?

You can set it to download them so all you'd have to do is apply them AFAIK.

If you go to System/Administration/Software Sources, there's an Updates tab there where you can specify how you want your update manager to work e.g. security updates only etc.

    Who's forcing you?

It's not Windows, most updates aren't critical security flaws, so you can safely put off the majority (ideally toning down the notification level as mentioned above).

Yep, its not as if they're major security issue fixes like in windows, just turn them off and turn them on once every few weeks. You think linux run servers are updated regularly?
