If you get caught for customs (which is very likely with golf clubs), you will be charged VAT at 21%, and then customs duty of around 4%.

Bought a 2nd hand driver recently off ebay from states.
There was €29 duty to be paid at the post office.
Still worked out dirt cheap due to exchange rate.

And don't forget the service charge that the courier companies are charging to administer customs - last time I got stuff from USA, it was €10!

Beginning to be bad value now even with good exchange rate!

I never bought clubs but I have bought golfballs, clothes, tee's, a couple of umbrellas and a rangefinder over the past few years and so far I've not had pay duty on any of it. Perhaps you just takes yer chance.

I got a driver there a while ago from a US seller and it was an absolute nightmare. The driver was grand and it arrived quickly but the hassle was with UPS. First time they tried to deliver I wasn't home and they wanted the customs tax of €32 up front. My sister had no money so they came back the next day. This time the courier said exact change was needed so the €50 note I left was no use. The third delivery attempt I expressly asked for it to be sent to my place of work, it wasn't and then there was nobody home. In the end I just went to the depot and picked it up myself.

Thing I don't get it is even though the driver only cost €40, which was displayed on the box, they still charged €32 customs tax??

As far as I know the customs duty is based on the retail value of the item in Ireland, regardless of the amount actually paid. A couple of years ago I got some free clubs, yes free clubs, from a U.S. site called opingolfer.com. All I had to pay was the postage. BUT I had to pay €50.00 duty when they arrived even though the documents attached clearly stated the item was free. The site is still available, by the way, if anyone wants to check it out. They mostly give away Warrior demo clubs, hybrids, wedges and full sets. The clubs are first rate and theres no catch, except you have to pay duty of course. Warrior Golf is a reputable brand in the States, you can check out their own web site also.

Surely there is something more to that site? Free Clubs!!!!!

There has to be a catch. Can anyone verify they received the clubs and no other costs attached

That site can't be legit, if something is advertised as free on the internet you just know its not!

It uses PayPal and SSL for their transactions.

Can't see why not... You still have to pay for S&H but its relatively cheap too.

Edit: Also they are McAffee Site Advisor approved, they sport the logo and the link is genuine...

First thank you Stevire, I did indeed forget the 't', the site is optingolfer.com.

I can assure you the site is completely legit. I got a set of 4 hybrids and a set of 3 wedges, all free except for p&p and as previously mentioned the subsequent Irish duty. I was referred to the site by a fellow club member who also got the hybrids. The clubs were first rate and I used them for about two years until I bought my Benross set, which had its own hybrids. I gave the others to a friend who is happily using them now. :)
