First off congrats to everyone who got results. Well done

Anyway I just have a few questions in relation to the leaving
    1. What did you find was the hardest and easiest exams...
    2.Which exams were marked hardest.
3.Anyone who did History...Any advice about the History research project

    1. Hardest - English in terms of timing, physics in terms of material. Easiest - French/German were strange but evidently doable...Chemistry...Biology upon soulful reflection...and the predictability of Irish was delicious.
    2. Personally, maths. I'm convinced the examiner just didn't attempt to untangle the code in which I solved the integration Q.

Hardest exam was accounting.Easiest was Irish.

English was marked hardest.Accounting was easiest.

    Pick something you're interested in.

Hardest was probably Biology or Geography (due to time constriction). I'd say english or french was the easiest, for me anyway.

I think Geography is marked hardest, because of the srp's when it comes to essays.
(Advice: Study, get yourself interested in the subject. Believe me I got an A1 and still believe Geography is quite hard)

I did History and my advice with regards to the project is find one that is both relevant and interesting. Also, try to make the topic as specific as possible to avoid the generic vague topics which can put off the examiner.

    Best of Luck!

1: Easiest was Irish. I'm not speaking from most students position here, because I went to an Irish school. An A in the bag. History was nice too, strong personal interest in History (It's what I'm off to do now :pac: ) so I'm the kind of sicko who actually enjoys that paper....

2: As said above, English in terms of timing.
Maths, I never took to maths myself.....nightmare stuff for me.

    3: Something specific.
Originally, I was going to do it on 'Winifred Carney: The Typist With a Webley' (She was a Belfast Socialist/Feminist who served as Connollys secretary in the GPO) It was a kind of biographical essay, which is not what they want. They're not looking for "X was born in ____ and died in ____" general stuff, a more specificly titled project (For instance 'The Battle Of Mount Street Bridge,1916' or 'Student Uprisings in Paris, 1968' ) will go down better. Best o' luck.

1.Hardest:definitly German (or french or whatever your having yourself). An endless, black hole of a course.
Easiest:everyone will have a differant answer but for me it was economics...real easy to predict and not alot to learn.

2.English...the timing is a nightmare, and no matter how much you study it still comes down to abit of luck on the day unless your naturally good at it.

3.Try and do something obscure...examiners dont want to read something they have heard a thousand times before,if there interested they will also give you more marks...

I was thinking Joseph Mengele??? Is that too boring.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 400 ✭✭camz09

I actually put him down as one of my options and my teacher said it wouldnt be too bad,(it's just one of my top five topics, although I did a different one which was fine as I got an A) Anyway,I wrote 'Joseph Mengele after WWII' in the "preliminary" ideas in our class and she said that could be an interesting one so I dont think it would be too boring. I think if you believe you can find sufficient sources for that, then that could turn out grand.

Maybe, I just dont know would it be in any way relevant.

For example I did "David Livingstone and African Exploration", and at the end stated how Livingstones expeditions were a cause of colonization. Then I linked this up the the unrest in Zimbabwe at the time. So It wasnt wholly relevant, but there was a small link.

And you have to want to do it.

+1 Make sure you are interested in what ever you do, because if you're anything like me, you'll be spending long painful hours editing to conform with the word limits. I did Charlie Haughey and the phone bugging scandals, and it ended up pretty interesting, on how haughey ever survived in Irish politics. As regards Mengele, you will, probably, be covering nazism any way, so why not take the opportunity to do something new

Hardest exam was probably history, in terms of training yourself to write fast. I loved history and invested a lot into it. It gave me a lot of heartbreak, but I got the A1 in the end...

Easiest for me was Irish. I had a bit of a flair for it and always found it graaand. It was the only exam I came out of smiling, even though the rest turned out practcally as good.

I've read you're other threads, and you seem to be worrying. Don't. You seem to be some one who will do great.:D

    Woah, that got kinda long:pac:

    1. Hardest: French (was marked easy tho, got a B2)......Easiest:Business
    2. Irish
    3. Didn't do History but I did do Geog in which you had to complete a research project also. Basically, just know exactly what they are looking for, spell it out (can't express that enough) but don't waffle. MOST IMPORTANTLY present the project like you spent days writing each individual letter.
I thought that may help you as I got an A1 in Geography this year.

1 - I thought the easiest was either History or Maths - a lot of paper two were theorems and I knew them all - B2 in honours! I'd say hardest was defo Business,a lot of it was irrevelant and not on the course, was amazed i got a B1!

2 - English was defo marked hardest,my teacher is unreal (Wrote in the poetry book etc) and in my pre i got 89 but in the real thing i got a B1 :( defo gonna appeal it

3 - First of all congrats on pickin history its the easiest subject to get an A imo! Defo pick something you're into and avoid doing a subject that everyone else does (eg the bael na blath ambush or hitler). The examiner wants to read something thats interesting but also proves ya have good historian skills. An ideal word count would be 1800 imo a bit long but not long enough to be penalised (the whole point of history is to compress information!) I loved this subject and delighted with my A1 :D

    1. Everyone is different. I found Irish and History to be the most time consuming in terms of study.

    2. Irish is marked quite hard, mainly because tere are like 20 parts to the exam. English P.1 is marked tough, mainly because some ofd it is subjective.

    3. Do a project on a subject you are interested in and will enjoy doing somewhat. If you enjoy your topic and are semi-passionate about it, it will be a whole lot better and it will come across to the examiner reading it.

As long as your title and general outline correspond with your conclusion and you dont just ramble on you'll get an A in the research thingy. The average is 17/20 so you should be fine.

    1. Hardest = HL Maths - D2. Easiest = HL French - A1:D

    2. HL Economics/HL Irish - B2 in both

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 68 ✭✭IceICEbaby

Hardest = HL irish, but i did grand :D
Easiest = Spanish imo....but the business paper was also lovely

I really think English was marked hard - i consistantly got A's all through
secondary and ended up with a C2:(
Advice - Do not leave out too many poets lol

I did HL history and got a b2...not brilliant but I think my research topic was quite good.
    * Don't do what i did and rush it last minuite though. Start early and make lots of draft for your teacher to correct and ask him/her to point out what you could improve/change etc...
    * I know they say you should always save the web sources....but a guy in my class made up loads of random sites and still managed a A2 lol ;)
    * Do your research and do it early...book sources are a pain in the @ss but read them and you're more likely to get a well-rounded insight
    * Are you doing HL? If so, i wouldnt recommend doing basically a "person in history" account....this second-hand advice btw (my history teacher was amazin though)
Apparantly at higher level you have to prove something by the end of the essay.......so you could write about how Joseph Mengele influenced/changed/affected.....the holocaust? blah blah
Of course if youre doing OL, i think its ok to write an account of his life..

Also, a girl in my class did Joseph Mengele, i remember reading her essay and it was interesting but im not sure if its something a lot of people 'go for'
If so, avoid like the plague my man because if you bore the examiner with a "not again" youre basically dead :D

    1. Hardest - Definitely Accounting. Easiest - for me anyway it was Applied Maths, everything worked out lovely =D

    2. I can't really say what was marked the hardest but I'm pretty damn sure Accounting was marked the easiest!

I was planning doing Jospeh Mengle's influene on Medicine in Auschwitz 1941-45

Now seeing as this thread is called Leaving Cert Question?? and I'm a terrorist who likes to hijack vehicles, I'm going to post a question of my own.

When doing a subject outside of school, do you still sit the actual exam within your school/centre? I've always assumed that was the case but I need to be sure.

And in case it's in any way relevent and for the craic:
My friend and I both do Applied Maths outside of school in the institute and are probably the only people who do it in our year.

Yep. All you have to do is lash down Applied Maths on the form you get in Dec/Jan or whenever it was.

It won't matter that it's just two of you in the school. I was the only one in my school taking the applied maths exam.

I couldnt agree more. As with accounting, if an exam is really difficult they'll prractically throw marks at it so dont worry.
For History I did Archbishop mc Quaid's reaction to the mother and child scheme,,, it was fine but i would now choose something more unique,:)
