Recording using 01v96

    Hi.

    I have a yamaha o1V96 mixing desk.

I also have Cooledit 2.0 on my desktop computer.

I'm wondering if there is some way I can link the mixer to my computer and, using the Cooledit software, have myself a multitrack recorder. Anyone know anything about this?

I got Yamaha Studio Manager Software with the desk but I think it's more for controlling the desk using a computer moreso than recording. Then again, I actually haven't got a clue (in general).

    Please and thanks.

    D.

The 01v96 is a fine desk. I use one myself. I have it linked to an RME digiface card, but your best option would be to get the mlan card for it (my16-Mlan)

This card goes in the slot on the back of the desk and will give you 16 tracks each way to the computer turning the 01v96 into a monster audio interface.

I'm sure there's plenty of features in the software drivers for the m-lan card if you were to use it with the 01V.
Never been a big fan of the Yamaha user interface though, still prefer a knob per function, my experience is on the 02 and the bigger desks, I've always found them a bit of a pig to navigate quickly, but I'm coming around slowly...

Studio manager software is amazing! You get a full mixer overview plus a "selected channel" window where you have all functions on screen. When I mix on the yammie I treat it as if the channels were plugins but the eqs and compressors and, most of all, the summing sound better than "in the box". Using a combination of software plugins and the 01v96 works very well for me. and I save the 01v96 configuration in the session folder for the song so I have full recall. I would love an 02r96 but will wait and see what yamaha have up their sleeve. The 96 series has been around a few years now.

, most of all, the summing sound better than "in the box". .

I'd imagine that would depend on the DAW you were using and the output interface you were comparing them to...

Output interface is irrelevant. It stays digital and I record back in via adat.
There is better clarity and stereo separation when summing in the 01v96 than in logic or PT MPowered. I always peak channels at -6db to leave plenty of headroom and it works well.

Thanks very much Tracks. That's some good info right there.

Answer me this though if you can (and excuse my dumbassness). If I was using the o1v96 to mix a live gig could I use the my16-Mlan card to have my computer recording 16 channels (on 16 seperate tracks) so that I could remix the live material on the computer at a later date?

If so would the Studio Manager software do this (have never even looked at that package before) or would different software be required.

    I don't see why you couldn't.
Would be handy enough set it up at home and store a routing setup, if it'll work for recording a band with a main mix and a couple of headphone mixes there should be enough in's and outs etc. Though you'd probably be better monitoring off the inputs than from the tape returns like doing a recording. So you wouldn't be sure if it was going to tape properly during the gig, but hey that's live for ya. Depends on if it's important or not.

I suppose you could even set up snap shots of mixes from your soundcheck for the live gig, so now!

Anyway, I should have said that I reckon DAWs have different sounding summing algorithms and I'm sure the O1v probably does sound better, or rather its algo'riddim does mon! I suppose my point was that the Yammha is basically a big computer with knobs and inputs and outputs as well as being a massive interface. Personally I prefer either mixing with a mouse and keyboard or else an analogue desk to mixing on an LCD and always forgetting to select a channel before changing an EQ, or moving a fader and it being an aux send and not the vocal like it was thirty seconds ago!
Also different DA converters have different line output amps, so I can't see why it wouldn't sound different from machine to machine.
