Hi all, I'm traveling to Vietnam in October and I've just discovered if you're landing there, as opposed to entering via Thailand, that you need a visa. I'm traveling between now and then so I need my passport. Has anyone any advice / experience on the situation?
    I'd appreciate any help!

    Hey,

We went to Vietnam on our honeymoon last year. You need to send your passport + the appropiate fees to the Vietnamese embassy in the UK:

Sometimes your travel agent (if you booked through one) will do it for you. If you're travelling in Oct, you have plenty of time to do it yourself.

OP seems to be travelling between now and then.

You're going to have to apply for a visa in a Vietnamese embassy somewhere along the way. It'll take a few days for them to process the application.

Also, you can't travel overland between Thailand and Vietnam. Laos and Cambodia are in they way? :)

Sorry! I missed that part of the post :) A friend of mine did say she got her when she landed. Worth ringing the embassy and asking if this is possible.

    Hey

Are you going to Thailand first? If so, you can get one in the Vietnamese embassy in Bangkok and it'll only take a couple of days.

you can get a Visa on Arrival, but only if you get it done via your hotel or a tour operator. You need to get a pre-approval from the vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

i did it in January. Got it done via my hotel. It cost 20 USD (in addition to the Visa fee I had to pay at arrival to immigration), and will take about 2-3 days.

They will then send you the approval document via email, and with that you can board the flight and get your visa at arrival in Vietnam.

    From online:

How to get a Visa on Arrival: we (Agency in this case) obtains what is called an “Approval Letter” for you from the Viet Nam Immigration Department in Hanoi. After we obtain the approval for you, we will forward you a copy by fax or email. Copies of the same document will be forwarded on your behalf to Vietnam immigration checkpoints at International Airports only, so that when you arrive in Viet Nam, the Immigration officers will have those documents on hand and will be able to issue your entry visa expediently.
