    Hi all,
well just planning the next stage in my training and i wanted to plan my winter races and include some CC races, I''ll do a few of the Bhaa CC races and also I'm looking at something like a Novice CC race, Is there a Dublin novice race also,

I've been checking times and i'd expect to be well down the field but by then i would hope to be doing the 6k in around 21 mins.

Last year's results for the Dublin Novice are here:

    http://dublinathletics.com/dynamic/pdf/Dublin%20Novice%20%20%20Cross%20Country%202007.xls

Last year's results for the Leinster Novice are here:

    http://www.athleticsleinster.com/results/results281007.htm#table9

You can't really tell much from the times because cross-country courses are different and often not measured very accurately. But if you're in shape to run 21 minutes for 6km on the road then you'll probably be reasonably competitive in these races.

    Hi there,

Thanks for that the 21 mins was a typo i'd be in around 24 mins actually. I don't mind been near the back of the field at all at the moment gives me somethign to improve on.

Dublin novice cc is first Sunday in October this year, Usual course is by the magazine fort in the Phoenix park, 4 laps, a number of small-moderate hills, but I would say a relatively fast course as cc goes due to half the circuit being flat and the time of year, usually means it's dead dry (but maybe not this year...).

I would imagine if you run 24mins on road/track, this might correlate with about 26mins on this course.

Thanks for the info, its a bit earlier then expected but will see how the training goes with the club, Was down with them last night and they didnt seem to have and speed work session at the moment, people seem to do their own stuff and jsut meet for long runs, is that the case in most clubs now? when i used to run with a club before we have gorups that did session together.

If thats the case i will join my old club

A lot of clubs unfortunately struggle to get numbers, or even if they do, they may be at such a variety of standards so people do their own thing. Best case scenario is a big club with lots of groups/standards. The downside of this is it can be hard to get on the team! Ideal is if you have a group at your level doing marathon traiing but also a group at that level doing shorter stuff, so there's always a group to go with.

Very competitive race today, only 1 point separating first 3 teams.
30 runners within 2 mins of third place runner compared to 13 last year.
The course was slightly different (shorter--5.79k, less of course towards magazine and more in forest) course was firm and times were quicker (winner in 18.16. compared with 20.00 last year.
Great to see the level competition.

Anyone know where and when the Leinster novice will take place?

There's very little information available online on the 08/09 cross country season schedule ...

Avondale! With that lovely hill! The Wicklow novice was held there yesterday, and I have to say it was the 1st time I enjoyed that course! Prehaps it was because everyone else around me seemed to go backwards on the hill where as I was strong up it. Bring on the Leinsters!!!!

Yesterday was my first XC in about 23 years. Great day, great course! First time round, hill no problem. Second time, no problem. Third time, that hill sapped any energy I had left in my legs!

So that will be 3 2k laps of the avondale course with that hill ye did, probably the same for Leinsters? Was the going soft or decent enough? Do ye know who won, I couldnt see rsults yet. Thanks

Sorry, can't help you with the winner (I was midpack), but the course was very soft underfoot. Feet got wet and had to hurdle water on a couple of places, but nothing too bad. It was only my first XC in quite a while, so I'm not going to be great on comparisons etc., but I just checked my Garmin results and I was very surprised how slow I was running- average 7 min miles:eek: I can run 6:20 miles for 10k no problem on the roads, so I would call Avondale heavy underfoot.

Going was very soft, but that was mainly because of all the rain we had the previous night. It made the downhill fairly tricky, no real point trying to hold back, you would most likely have slipped.

Jason O'Byrne (Parrell) won the mens race, I dunno what time, but probably something under 22mins. All the results are now up on athelticswicklow.com

Is the leinster novice 6k also? If so then yeh, it will be the same 3 laps again.

    Hi.

Do you have your garmin stats for this race? Would be curious to see total climb?

    Hi.

According to my Garmin, the total climb for the combined three laps is 253m. To one used to IMRA races, this should be a mere wrinkle on the landscape, but, by god!, the legs were dead after the third time climbing that hill!

I'd take a long, slow slog up Mt. Leinster over it any day of the week...

Leinster is 6k allright. Will have to do a bit of hill training before it I reckon.

How long would it take by car to get from Dublin city centre to the Leinster Novice course does anyone know?

    Thanks.

Hi donothoponpop, would you still know the race lenght from Avondale from your Garmin?
    Thanks

From my experience Garmin's can't be trusted when it comes to altitude or climb - they always over estimate. Actual climb I would guess is more like 60% of that ...

Looking forward to Sunday - my first CC outing of the year - the more climbing the better - pain is good for us : )

I have the three laps at 3.89 miles.

I'd have to agree with you here, I've done quite a few hill runs and there's no way the three laps aggregate 250m+. While my Garmin is good for distance, and pace, it has let me down before on climb.

Best of luck to all running, I'd be there myself but I'm hitting the streets of Dublin on Mon.
