    Hi folks, hoping you have some suggestions on how to get my home PC booting normally again.

    The problem first happened when my brother was on the computer a couple of days ago. He was on the Sydney Herald website (nothing else running) when a message popped up which read something along the lines of;

    "Program X is attempting to access the internet.

    Allow access this once
    Always allow access
    Deny access"

    He was mid story on the site so he didn't really pay attention to what program X was, but he does remember clicking "allow access this once".

    A short while later one or two pop boxes flashed on screen, he closes down firefox and notices that his background picture has been changed to a picture which looked like a normal background but with the message "Adware / Spyware has been detected" printed in the centre of the screen.

    It must have dawned on him at this stage that he'd mucked up because he decided to run McAfee and let me solve the problem.

    So I gave out to the brother for a while which made me feel a bit better but unfortunately didn't fix the computer. It did give McAfee the time it needed to complete a full scan of the computer though. No virus' were detected.

    I reboot the computer and there was a blue screen that flashed for a split-second, before the boot screen came up, offering choices for boot mode. If I choose "boot normally" it goes through everything again, and the boot screen comes up again. The only options that will work are safe mode or safe mode with networking. I am running Windows XP Home SP2. I tried doing a restore to one week ago, but this didn't help.

    Things I've tried so far
    • Checked msconfig to ensure that the Normal Startup option is selected.
    • Run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program and saved the log of what it found.
    • Run Panda Activescan Online Scanner program and saved the log of what it found.
    • Uninstalled the driver for my display adaptors (Radeon X600) and reinstalled them - no effect.

    Any suggestions on what I can try next?

    In safe mode, click start, then run. In run enter the following text without the quotes, "eventvwr.msc". Check the system tab for errors, they come up with red symbols to the side. Double click on them and post the description here.
